I think he was 4th, but he is closer to the winner this year. TT’ing must be getting more popular there in Sweden. 2 minutes behind Backstedt is pretty dam fast…
I think he also really made a big focus on that race last year, as I recall his training was basically TT-specific for quite a while leading up to the race. I think it was much earlier last year, which is perhaps why he was able to focus on it, and also perform better than many of the cyclists, all of whom should really be in peak form at this point in the season. Great result from the Big Bear, regardless…

National cycling championships for all countries (except the US, of course) are held the same time each year (last weekend in June?) so as to not interfere with the three Grand Tours and all other pro races: the race calendar is clear at that time to allow the pro riders to race their nat’l championships.
Still, as you say, to be that competitive in any single discipline is quite an achievement for a triathlete!
it is quite an achievement, but perhaps not as rare as we sometimes pretend. what is rare is to find someone who is consistently winning triathlons and remains (at least) nationally competitive in a single sport. on the local (phila) front, we have laurie hug and john kenny who can both place similarly to bjorn’s results in swim events … on the other hand, they are not winning big triathlons. we will see more people like jaja too, putting in strong performances in their speciality split during a triathlon, but not doing quite well enough over all to win races. what’s a bit different about bjorn (as far as i understand his history) is that he’s going in the reverse direction.
I think that is pretty darn good to be only three min down at your nationals in the TT. Even though his place was not as good his time down was about the same on the winner. My hat is off to him. I think some of us have very unrealistic expectations of our pros in beating the worlds best cyclists at their game. Great job B.
I was going ok considering all my health problems recently. Unfortunately my rear hub broke down with 17km to go and the wheel change took almost 90s alone plus losing all my momentum so that kinda ruined my day… Weird day as well where some people starting early got a killer tail wind going out to the turn around which died down just after so those of us who started last had a bit slower conditions as well…
It’s your Karma payback for out running Chris Leigh those last few miles at WIldflower…You make those deals with the devil, and you have to payback sometime…
Really, that’s awesome with all that bad stuff happening. It was pretty good before I knew all your troubles, so now it puts it in a whole new perspective. Looks like you were primed for a podium spot, minus the usual Bjorn luck…
