Anyone else annoyed by this?
Is garmin any better/more reliable?
For those who don’t know, suunto gps watches are very reliant on their software. You can do some interesting stuff - uploading routes, customizing readouts, and of course, dowloading where you’ve been (and sharing with strava if you want). But they way they have things set up, when movescount is down you can’t get your watch to interact with your computer at all. It’ll stil track speed and distance, etc., but no chance off seeing where you went or anything like that.
This is annoying even when it works, since it means that if you’re someplace where you’re not on-line, you can’t hook your watch up to your computer. but when their service - ‘movescount’ - is down, you’re just on your own.
So now, suunto is looking at a 4-day outage.

does garmin have similar issues? the watch genearlly works ok, and it’s got some advantages, but obviously, some drawbacks too…
Yeah, pretty annoyed. I’ve never been a fan of Movescount. I would really like the ability to manually grab files off of the watch, and then upload to other site, like Strava, but no can do.
That is annoying. I had an Ambit 3 and it was the best watch I had used at that time and have always been very happy with Suunto products in the past, but have never really been too thrilled with how closed off everything is.
Sporttracks has a Suunto Ambit plugin, and tapiriik syncs my stuff from there to Strava, if that is something you are interested in. Seems to work just fine.

Annoyed? Yes, but not to the point I’m willing to swap Suunto for a Garmin. Historically, Garmin has not been good to me with neither hardware nor software.
For all the good it will do, there is a petition on Change.org asking Suunto to allow Ambit users to modify watch settings and/or extract data, upload routes, etc. without the use of Movescount. Based on the absence of updates for the original Ambit (because the price was too good to pass up, I only now recently updated to the Ambit 2s), it’s doubtful the petition will do much, but I signed it anyway.
FWIW, here’s the official statement:
24 DECEMBER 2014
UPDATE- MOVESCOUNT SERVICE OUTAGE UNTIL 26TH DECEMBER (CET)
This is an update for earlier news published yesterday.
Dear Movescount members,
We are sorry to inform you about the prolonged issues in our service. The restoring process hasn’t progressed as earlier planned. The process is pushing the Movescount live date until Friday 26th of December. We are working to get this out earlier, but cannot promise other than being live on Friday.
This is definitely not the present you have asked for and we are truly sorry for the problems that this has caused for you. This is a good lesson for us for the future.
True, you do need the Movescount app installed locally on your computer, but it still works even when Movescount is down. I’m moving a workout from my watch to Sporttracks as I type this, and Movescount is still offline.

seems like once you’ve got it set up, it’ll work while movescount is down. didn’t seem like i could set it up during the outage.
I am quite sure that people at Suunto will be very annoyed by this themselves and draw some lessons (although they have had other of downtimes this year taking time to solve…). But as some previous poster said, it still doesn’t justify giving up on Suunto. The Ambit watches are just superior over the competition and so is their software if it is online

In what service scenario is a four day outage acceptable? None. A four day outage means you will have more outages because their software was either developed poorly to begin with or they are losing people and don’t have the expertise to fix issues. They don’t want you to sync offline without their service because they want the data. All companies want these days is data. If they create an offline system and you upload directly to Strava they are cutout. Worst part is they sent a tweet stating its fixed and its not. Embarrassing.

All of the sync services require the source site, in this case Movescount, to be online. Sadly that is the issue meaning syncing to any other service is off the table.
No, the Movescount software, at least for Windows, will sync your workouts to your desktop and then to Sporttracks even when movescount.com is down, I did it several times while their site was down. But if you are setting up Movescount on your computer for the first time or you want to change watch settings and movescount.com is down, I think at that point you are pretty much screwed…
Thanks for sharing this is in slowtwitch. Yes there are large group of our customers that are annoyed. The service outage happened at the worst possible time. It was initiated from infrastucture (serverside) failure, which lead into need to restore the whole solution from scratch with the use of backups. The process didnt go as planned and this lead into prolonged outage. (The original statement was to get this live on 24th… Which then finally was out in 26th).
There was in late spring/early summer two similar situations, which lead into higher focus/bigger effort to ensure the reliability, scalability and the performance. However many of the outcomes of this work are still to come into production environment.
This situation and the feedback from our customers has been heard in every level of suunto. There is lessons learned, actions to take and roadmaps to be aligned so that this wont happen again. The need for offline, android, compatibility with various other services and many other potential development items are definitely in center of this discussion.
We can never apologizes enough for this, especially for people who just got Suunto as a present.
JanneK,
Thanks for chiming in.
I think one thing that Suunto needs to really understand, it that no one gets the Suunto so that they can use Movescount. An offline app, android, one that doesn’t break down - all that would be great. But I know that for me, I have the Suunto and the strava plug-in/app/whatever it is. Unless I want to plan a route or change a display, I’m never going to the full movescount screen. I suspect that I’m not alone in this.
So a way to make it easier to do this when Movescount isn’t working would be the most important thing. Give us a few options.
Thanks.

I certainly hope this provided the impetus to move ahead with direct tapiriik integration. According to this tweet, this has been in the works for close to a year now.
