Looks pretty cool. It may not have all of the specific modes of the 910XT but the battery life options and solid construction are attractive:

I am a member at REI and have their visa card, so that’s like 10 or 15% off/dividend. Plus a lifetime return policy. I may be getting one ![]()
50 hour battery life with GPS. Awesome.
What is the current longest lasting GPS? I currently use a Suunto T4C with footpod, much better than GPS in my opinion. Hundreds of hours of battery life, no losing and waiting for the signal.
I use the garmin 610. It’s a pretty small gps watch, works with all my bikes and it’s small. I love the touch screen…but the battery time sucks. If I got the 50 hours of the suunto I would have the perfect watch.
Also I’ve has the suunto core and that’s a pretty soild watch as well.
This Ambit looks pretty damn big though.
I’d like to get more first hand exp’s with it though or t least hear people’s exp’s with it.

DCRainmaker mention the Ambit would be reviewed shortly (towards the end of this: http://bit.ly/ArIvNK).
The Ambit does look/sound attractive, but I likely will stick with the t6d due to dollars: $500 is a lot steep right now.
I got intrigued after reading this post, and discovered that the Ambit’s battery life is only 14 or 15 hours in full run training mode, and is only 50 hours in a dialed down mode suitable for hiking. So based on this, its battery life is actually worse for us triathletes compared with the Garmin 910xt.
However, it still looks like a contender, especially as its marketing clearly focuses on the accuracy of the running pace function, which I understand is a problem with GPS running watches in general, but I don’t own any and so I’m really looking forward to the DC Rainmaker review. Also, if the running pace function is really as good as the marketing makes it out to be, then if only the watch could also tell pace based on your arm swings from its accelerometer (which I’m not sure it does as I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere), there would be little need for a footpod!
My Ambit (black version) arrived yesterday from REI. It’s a beauty!
Where did you see the “lifetime return policy”. I’ve had an REI Visa card for years and have never seen anything about lifetime returns?

I guess it’s not exactly lifetime, but I’ve heard of people returning items that they have had for 10+ years. I do believe REI generally frowns upon that, but they’ve honored it.
The North Face has a similar policy:
all merchandise featured online and in our retail stores carry a lifetime warranty, enabling athletes to Never Stop Exploring™. If you purchase merchandise with defects in workmanship or materials, even after extended use, we’ll repair the product, without charge, or replace it, at our discretion.
10 yrs… that’s forever in tech gadget years!
By then our GPS watches will be replaced by plug-in ports at the base of our skulls…like in the Matrix ![]()
