Sutto on Ryf: "We want a course record bike-split."

Q about @danielaryf interview: ‘She talked about going hard on the bike. How hard?’ Coach: We want a course record bike-split. #prettyhard

Not sure if he’s messing with her competitors heads or speaking straight up. A bit of both I bet.

I think Ryf is going to need to push the bike in order to podium or win, she doesn’t seem to have the wheels to run with Rinny. Typically that strategy doesn’t work with experienced racers, but maybe the course record on the bike will bring more attention to Ryf and Sutton

It seems like Ryf is one of the more interesting competitors in the race…she and Frodo. They will be fun to watch…not long now!

“Frodo” that’s funny

It would describe me more than a past Olympic champion
.

How does that mess with their heads? Having a 20’ lead on Rinny or a 10’ lead on Joyce at T2 won’t win her the race if she runs a 3:10. But it’s worth trying. I don’t think it gets in her heads, but it might be some good gamesmanship to try and make them over bike. The problem is, that Rinny isn’t up front out of T1 and doesn’t ride tactically.

Starky could ride 4:05 and have a 10’ lead and still get run down by 8-10 guys all going under 2:50 even if he can manage a 3:00 flat.

She has run 1:17 at 70.3. Never been pushed on the run in her two IM wins either.

I think people under under-estimating how well Ryf can run. Rinny will need to keep that gap at T2 under 5min, not 20min. And it likely will be 20min.

You have to understand that in Ryfs qualifying races the plan would have been to only run as fast as needed to get the W and the KQ.

“Starky could ride 4:05 and have a 10’ lead and still get run down by 8-10 guys all going under 2:50 even if he can manage a 3:00 flat.”

But, what if he has a 20ish minute lead, then it would maybe be interesting. I don’t think this is likely, but I think he’ll have to try if he really wants top 3 (5).

A course record puts Mirinda maybe 10 minutes behind at the start of the run? You have to figure that Mirinda will prob throw down close to the same run she did last year.

A course record attempt didn’t work out so well for Starky last year.

I’d say don’t worry about records and just race your race. It def. sounds like coach is just trying to get in the heads of the other racers.

Ryf is going to need to put 10+ mins ahead of Rinny on the bike in order make it competitive during the run.

That would be interesting… a 4:05.. to the next best 4:25. If he could manage a 3:05 off that, it will force them to either run a 2:45… or not let him get a 20’ lead. He’s the catch… Kienle won’t let him get that far away, and will outrun him.

depends if 70.3 World Champs kienle shows up. Then starky would lick his chops

…IM Frankfurt is the best example of what Kienlie is capable of this year. 4’ off the swim, didn’t panic and rode hard but probably more evenly paced than Kona last year, then laid down a very good run only 6’ slower than Frodeno. But… I suspect Frodeno is faster now and won;t have 3 flats. 3 flats…what is that 8 minutes? So he probably rode a mid to low 4:2x if he didn’t have issues. Frankfort was fairly hot and humid from what I read…but no Kona for sure.

But it’s worth trying. I don’t think it gets in her heads, but it might be some good gamesmanship to try and make them over bike.

You just answered how it may mess with their heads.

I didn’t realize the race was over after the bike leg in Kona…

A huge lead on the bike complicates the run pace of the people choosing. The larger the gap they need to make up the more risk they have to take in their running pace plan, and the more risk they have of going out too hard and blowing up.

If a top runner comes in 5 minutes after Starky, he probably just sets a nice conservative early pace and slowly brings him in. But 10 minutes? You might worry a bit, maybe you chase too hard. We have seen people go out too hard on the run before.

Now a really saavy racer may decide ahead of time not to let any of that influence their plans on the run, but pressure and fatigue can wear on the mind, so you can never be sure.

Not that it means much, but in the only meeting between Ryf and Carfrae on the ITU circuit (that I can find), Ryf outran Rinny.

How slow do you think Ryf is?

Not for nothing, but she’s my pick to win. Reminds me of another Sutton coached athlete who was running a little below the radar in 2007 and took the tri world by storm.

Bob

Ryf is going to need to put 10+ mins ahead of Rinny on the bike in order make it competitive during the run.

10+ minutes very, very reasonable. Last year the Kessler/Joyce/Vesterby/Swallow group started the run almost 8 minutes ahead of Rinny, and that was on a day with favourable swim conditions and a lead group that was big enough to attack on the bike but didn’t fully take advantage. Look for the addition of Ryf and a healthy MBE and Leanda to that front group of swimmers to really open up the bike course on Rinny.

Tic for tac. So it’s pretty much sum equal more than likely. For everything you just said, it also applies to the person “over biking” at the front.
