Sustained Energy or Perpetuem?

I have been using both during my training and can not really notice a significant advantage of one over the other.

My dliemma, although minor is For Eagleman, weather to use Sustained Energy or Perpetuem during the bike segment. I will be carrying a flask of hammer gel for the run segment.

Thoughts/opinions on which one works better for you?

I just finished 3 weeks of training with perpetuem, and am starting three weeks with sustained energy and hammer gel - mix 2 scoops of SE for every one serving of hammer gel for flavor. So far the concentrate of perpetuem has been OK, energy levels have been high and no bonking - though I did have a bad incident with a coke on a 120 mile ride (apparently the combination was more than my stomach wanted to handle).

Why not mix a high concentrate of perpetuem for the run? Put it in a blender with a little water and you can make a nice syrup that goes down easily with water. I used this on a 17 mile training run, went very well.

That was my other option…to use Perpetuem all the way through but I was not sure how I would carry perpetuem on the run.

My plan is to pack a 3 hour supply into 3 water bottles and take them with me for the ride course. So that will be about 2 scoops for each bottle mixed with plain water. I would like to consume this throughout the whole ride. No solid foods.

I’ll try your suggestion to make concentrated perpetuem. I’ve never thought of that before. I’ll pack a flask with the syrup and take that on a training run this weekend. If that works out, I think I’m all set. I’ll use Perpetuem for the whole race.

I’ve never used SE but I always use Perpetuem on the bike and hammergel on the run. Works great for me.

The web site at e-caps.com is actually the best source for this info but I’ll bite.

In a nutshell Sustained Energy is intended for efforts of 2-3 hours (combined with Hammer Gel) and Perpetuem is intended for efforts exceeding 3 hours. I use that information as my general guideline and I’ve had great results. They make some great products.

I can’t recommend enough looking at all the great information on the e-caps site.

Does Perpetueum have electrolytes in it, or do you still need to use Endurolytes or something similar?

Graz,

I’ve had a lot of success making SE “shakes” for longer efforts. For ultra-events, I mix 9 scoops of SE and 3 servings of HG in a tall bottle. This provides around 1200 calories in a bottle.

That bottle is kept on my downtube. I only take water at aid stations so I don’t need to worry about what is served on course. I take a “swallow” of from my shake every 20 minutes (roughly 50 calories per swallow) and chase it with a good drink of water. I take Endurolytes every 30 minutes during the bike (1-3 depending upon conditions/sensations).

I haven’t tried Perpetuem in this manner, but will be speaking with Hammer today to better understand the implications.

Perpetuem DOES have endurolytes…As does the new HEED sports drink.

Even though perpetuem has endurolytes in it, I still take 1-2 per hour in addition.
