Surprise! Some Gitmo detainees are innocent

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Many detainees locked up at Guantanamo were innocent men swept up by U.S. forces unable to distinguish enemies from noncombatants, a former Bush administration official said Thursday. “There are still innocent people there,” Lawrence B. Wilkerson, a Republican who was chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, told The Associated Press. “Some have been there six or seven years.”

Six or seven years??? You have got to be kidding me, right?

Too bad they dont have a country willing to take them back. I suppose we could just send the to live on the streets in the city you live in.

We took all the criminals from Cuba didn’t we? Why not take the innocent too?

From the article:
"In his posting for The Washington Note blog, Wilkerson wrote that “U.S. leadership became aware of this lack of proper vetting very early on and, thus, of the reality that many of the detainees were innocent of any substantial wrongdoing, had little intelligence value, and should be immediately released.”
Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney fought efforts to address the situation, Wilkerson said, because “to have admitted this reality would have been a black mark on their leadership.”

Rummy and Dick displayed strong leadership skills. Even if they were fucking wrong - they were still “leaders”. I miss them.

In the US our legal system is setup so that 1000 CITIZENS who are guilty of a crime will go free before one inocent person goes to jail wrongly. We have found that this system is not with out fault.

That being said - these idiots at Gitmo are NOT CITIZENS, do not have any constitutional rights, no Geneva Convention rights, no rights at all…and beyond that. If they were on the street corner chilling with their terrorist buddies, I am sure they are guilty of something. Just as if there were drug dealers on the corner near your home, would not matter to you if only one of six was a drug dealer - you would want all six gone.

I say screw em.

Why do you hate freedom?

They are welcome to stay with me for a while.

I’m serious

Oh, well if you are sure then I take back my offer.

I bet they can make some “killer” Vindaloo

I think that not-citizens actually do have constitutional protections - One of the things I learned while thinking the same thing. And I think everyone has Geneva convention rights. It’s the byproduct of living in a nation of laws.

Now, what to do with all those Gitmo folks; that’s a question that has no acceptable realistic answer.

So Obama has been in office now for two months. He has a whole crew of people that could be looking at this. If this is totally true then why hasn’t he released these people. If the evidence is overwhelming and available at the highest level I would think that he would have righted this miscarriage of justice immediately. He has obviously worked hard on the whole Gitmo thing otherwise he would not have released the signing statement closing it down?

Seriously, if this is true the Obama should not be holding them correct?

If theres any cure for irrational hatred of america its some good tex-mex and a margarita

I can provide this

The administration is probably working out where to send em without causing an uproar within the frightened masses (hi record!)
.

Oh so they are innocent and we are hysterical! You are right it is always America’s fault.

I have ordered my T Shirt. Welcome back Carter!

I don’t know if they are innocent, but if a republican feels some of them are, that suggests maybe they really are, heh.

That said, if some of these guys are innocent, they should be set free. and it is factual that if they just let them loose on the streets of Florida it would make many Americans hysterical, probably irrationally so if they really are found innocent by a judge/jury.

If you have a specific point of disagreement with any of the above, please point it out and explain the error in my judgement. Thank you.

Also please do no suggest that I think Americans are always at fault. My disdain for the intelligence of humanity knows no national boundaries. I think we are all morons, myself included. I can provide evidence for this claim if required =)

They may (possibly) not have any rights in the statutory sense of the word “rights.” But I would argue strongly that they do in the moral sense of the word.

“immigrants facing deportation do have some rights. Most are entitled to a hearing before an immigration judge, representation by a lawyer (but not one that’s paid for by the government), and interpretation for non-English-speakers. The government must provide “clear and convincing” evidence to deport someone (a lower standard than “beyond a reasonable doubt”).”

Now I doubt you could call these innocent people immigrants but where on Earth is it OK to put knowingly innocent people in prison? Certainly not in the USA.

Haven’t you been paying attention? These guys are terrorists. They are the worst of the worst. They don’t deserve the great life we’ve provided for them down there. Why, this is probably the first time they’ve had access to great American health care. They should be grateful.

(I don’t do pink font color)

Maybe if we gave them weed they would chill out

The White House doesn’t want to just arbitrarily decide who’s guilty and who’s innocent. (Well at least this White House). Obama is trying to set up justice system with Congressional authority. This would be a judicial process that’s transparent, repeatable, and accountable. So decisions aren’t made by some secret cabal in the White House/Pentagon.
