Support melanoma research - win Hed Stingers & K-Swiss gear

Hi all,

This year I’m taking part in one of the toughest half iron distance races on the race calendar, the Savageman triathlon. This race is working with the Joanna M Nicolay Melanoma Foundation to raise awareness and funds for their fight against melanoma. As a triathlete spending a lot of time in the sun increasing the risk of developing skin cancer I’m happy to try and do a small part in helping support the foundation. Togheter with a few of my sponsors and in conjunction with the Savageman tri we are putting on a contest where people have the chance to win a Hed Stinger wheelset(~1500usd value) and a generous package with K-Swiss shoes and gear(~500usd value). All you have to do to support melanoma research and awareness is to guess my bike split for the race on september 21. Each guess cost 10usd and all proceeds goes directly to the Joanna M Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. To enter and for more info log onto; http://www.savagemantri.org/Bjorn.html

Thanks

Bump…
I’m with you. Just how “tough” is the bike course?

I don’t really know but it’s hilly in general and have one extremely steep hill in particular called the Westernport wall or something like that. I think Josh Beck who is a very strong cyclist has gone 2h42min so it’s a pretty slow course…

That’s pretty cool, can we guess more than once?? I imagine that once you lock in a guess, it is carved in stone too, so may have to do a couple early, and a couple late once we get some training reports, weather updates, ect…

SO was it meltdown this weekend, or that pesky blister that keeps popping up??? You had us all on the end of our seats for a long time this Ironman, did you my patented siesta from mile 20 to 26??? Great effort by the way…

Yep, you can vote as much as you want. The more the better…

Yesterday was tough. Weather was perfect for me but I simply wasn’t good enough yesterday. I guess I haven’t really been in super shape lately which I felt already at cycling nats. Anyway, tried to be really cautios with my pacing on the swim and bike but actually blew up on the ride with 60k to go which I rarely do even if I go plenty harder. Started running ok after about 4-5k and felt good until 26-27km into it when my legs just seized up without much warning. All I could do was walk the rest of it… No siesta for me though, much too cold for that yesterday

It’s the toughest bike course for a tri I’ve ever heard of or seen. Only 3 people did the bike course in under 3 hours last year.

I’m not a particularly good climber but I have done a lot of famous climbs so I have some basis for comparison – think Six Gap. There are lots of short, sharp climbs, and some narrow, switchback descents. There’s only one long climb, up Big Savage mountain, but it starts with a ridiculous little section through the town of Westernport including the aforementioned “Wall”.

I plan on coming back to suffer again if my work travel plans allow it (I’m supposed to be in San Diego the following Monday). I’ll look forward to meeting the famous Bjorn.

super hard bike course. I did the aqua-bike last year b/c I was injured from an IM the weekend before, so I tried and ride with no calories since I was not running off the bike…I end up flat on my back in transition for about an hour after the bike ride :-)).

Good job , in finishing the race Bjorn !

I have utmost respect seeing pro’s finish at all costs.

Best of luck in your future races !

Now I gotta get out my spreadsheet and guess

Terry

There’s only one long climb, up Big Savage mountain,

Great, that’s the one my car has a hard time making it over on 68

Is Savageman still open? Probably a stupid question, on many levels.

“I end up flat on my back in transition for about an hour after the bike ride :-)).”

    • :-))??? I’d say ‡-Ð I think that’s a race that’s not liikely to show up on my calendar any time soon.

As Al Capone once said, “Vote Early and Vote Often”. Actually, in all seriousness, this contest will likely be one of the best statistical chances for folks to win a prize package of serious value. While folks are super intrigued by Bjorn’s biking ability, I just don’t see thousands and thousands of people caring enough to make a guess. Remember, though, it’s only $10 and it’s a tax-deductible, charitable donation.

Now, about the course. I’m the SavageMan course architect, so I designed it. Chris McDonald, last years champion, said during awards speech that I should see a psychiatrist. It’s hilly, but come on, it isn’t that bad. Hell, the first 18 and last 12 miles are flat or downhill and there’s only 5700 feet of total climbing, so how bad can it really be?

The Westernport Wall (http://www.savagemantri.org/Westernport_Wall.html) is a novelty, but not really important to the race. At max grade of 31% riders have an option to go around the block instead. It’s great for the spectators and a place the race buses spectators out to to cheer, shake cowbells, pick up fallen riders, etc… Those that make it over without unclipping get a brick engraved with their name laid into the road surface itself. But, for those racing, the bike course is much more than just the Wall. The next 6+ miles over Big Savage Mountain is a tough grind, particularly the 1st and last 2 miles of this. Then a descent and then repeated 1/2 mile or so steep ups and downs that just beat you up. McAndrews Hill, Otto Lane, Miller Road (new in 2008), Maynardier Ridge - they all just beat you down to where if you still have the heart for it after Maynardier Ridge you’re left with a flat time-trial final 12 miles to bring it home strong.

The run is challenging but not extreme like the bike. Last year it climbed twice to the top of Meadow Mtn (with long 2.5 mile descent), but due to deteriorated trail conditions and increased number of participants, run course is changed for 2008. It’s still challenging with some rollers and it’s more road and less trail than 2007 course, but not the extreme course the bike is.

Registration is still open. Half will sell-out, probably in next weeks. International registrations are accelerating but will probably remain open.

What BigZach fails to mention is that in addition to being undergeared (39-23), undernourished, and 1 week post-IM, he still threw down 3rd fastest bike split and was one of first to sign up to do it again for 2008 when registration opened.

Shell out $10 and buy a guess at Bjorn’s time and then post here. http://www.savagemantri.org/Bjorn.html

It’s now less than a week out from the race so just bumping this up for everyone as there are still time to sign up and win some great gear while supporting a good cause. See first post for details.

Thanks for the reminder. Hope this thread stays burried. My chances will be better.

Crap, did I just bump this?

Oh, well. Good luck in your race.
