Very cool.
I hope that gasoline reaches $7.50/gal.
That’ll change some people’s perspective about cycling… then we could ride/travel/commute with greater peace.

People will still drive and be in a bigger hurry to get wherever they are going. Can’t waste precious gas idling behind some slow biker.
well said!

That’s a good point, it may make people less tolerant and more angry at cyclists.
However, I think that if gas reaches a price to deter people from driving that there could be a war of attrition… Who’s gonna give in first, the triathlete or the Average Joe?
If the cycling community unites and the public demands shoulders built on most commuter roads, we could enjoy a safer, more sustainable (and eco friendly) method of transport… not to mention the health savings this country would garner by reducing obesity.
no, you will just have more bike traffic to deal with, haha

I wish I could commute…I work for the Dept of Health in Maryland and am not allowed to commute or park my bike at my building due to “threat level concerns.”

fight this policiy!

Just wanted to bump this as I think it’s a great cause.

That is just stupid. Your cost for EVERYTHING will double…how the hell do you think food gets to the store? Common sense never ever gets in the way of hippie liberal tree huggers.
given that most people eat two times too much crap, buy two times too much crap, use two times too much AC, and so on…
hehe

Too bad the major cities of the United States don’t have the money to change the infrastructure to support it. Most people in the US live too far from their workplace to even think about cycling to work. I don’t think the donut eaters are going to ride their bike more than 5 miles let alone the 65 I have to drive on days I go to my office.
I wonder what UPS would charge to ship bike parts to the LBS if gas was $7.50…

we will probably find out in the next 10 years
not that I wish for it, i wish that we find a huge fountain of infinite oil in the middle of Austin Texas that supplies us with cheap, easy energy forever
but you know, hope in one hand, shit in the other
see which fills up first

Pretty cool he’s doing this, I really think this society needs to go in a new (and painful for some) direction with commuting. There’s just too many cars out there, not enough road with decent shoulders, and an aloof attitude towards cyclists. Ironically I think if we went in a mass transportation / cycling direction in this county many of our health problems would be solved.
** Most people in the US live too far from their workplace to even think about cycling to work.**
Just so you’re aware, the average American lives less than 15 miles from where they work.
Definitely doable, but way too far for the majority of the lazy…
Currently $6.50-$7.00/US gallon is what people pay for gas in many EU countries. I don’t expect someone as smart as you (you’ve got to be, if you are to be that arrogant and call other people stupid) to speak anything other than your native language. Yet even with your language skills you could probably check what the typical going rates are among the major logistics companies in the UK and Ireland.
Another way to look at it is - yeah, you pay what? $2/US gallon nowadays?? but then your country spends $340,000,000,000/year to fight a war so that you can keep getting this price. When my family was paying US federal income tax that really bothered me, cause I don’t buy that much gas, you know.

But, those of us who need to travel for work from office to office must still drive. I wish I could ride to work, this whole wearing a suit thing has me down.
As for the price of gas in Europe, it is just not the same game as in Europe the land mass is tiny compared to the US, and our rural population base as compared to typical cities in Europe - and the war has NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING to do with it. Yet another thing libs try to hold on to that just is not true. I really love the complaint about it…all while NASCAR is the #1 growing sport in the US…as usual, when someone does not like the facts - ignore them.
Very cool.

Why would I care if the price of goods doubles? Everyone suffers the same detriment, except those who plan or adopt a position of anticipation.
Great cause, but I think it’s futile.
This is a constant source of conversation while out on rides with friends. I was hit while riding in a bike lane that was buffered by an 8 foot wide lined out area. In addition, the lady who hit me had a wide, newly paved lane, a middle turn lane, and absolutely no oncoming traffic as it was early on a Sunday morning. If she had wanted, she could have safely avoided me by 30 feet. Not to be, though.
Here in SoCal, bike lanes are everywhere, but nevertheless you have the daily jackass who wants to see how close he can get his sideview mirror to your shoulder. I don’t understand the the benefit to the driver of playing this game. If the driver succeeds, he passes within inches of a cyclist and gains nothing. If the driver is only slightly off, he hits a cyclist and has the prospect of killing somebody, possibly to be followed by prison time. With a “win” (driving close to the cyclist) gaining the driver absolutely nothing and a “loss” (hitting the cyclist) gaining the driver blood on his hands and prison time, why would anybody play the game? I don’t know, but drivers seem to love it. Game theory might blow up analyzing this problem.
Another thing that baffles me: Multiple times per ride you see drivers undertake super-dangerous maneuvers–like speeding up to pass a cyclist just to make a right turn in front of the cyclist, or veering into oncoming traffic to get around a cyclist a moment sooner–to literally save 5 or 10 seconds. In essence, the message is that 10 seconds of their time is worth your life. Simply cannot wrap my head around the thinking…but then again I do sometimes watch Cops as a reminder.
