Supertri Lands Warner Bros. Discovery Broadcast Deal; Will Stream on HBO Max

Ouch…so yeah no SL for me. I guess I’ll wait 2 days for the 5 min YT highlights. I like SL format, I kinda view it more as “meaningless” all star type of racing that lets the pro’s get paid good money and that’s good vs the racing actually meaning anything within olympic pathway, etc, so it’s one of the few formats that is really solid to watch, but if I have to miss, SL will be I miss.

I’m paying for the basic tier so I can get the Mtb World Cup coverage. The tri is a nice bonus, but five minutes after the mtb season is over I’m pulling the plug.

Having a broadcast partner will always likely increase the feasibility of your race series continuing since it’s then moved off your own budget line. So I get that from ST’s pov. I wonder what it will actually do though in terms of viewership numbers. But it may just be an inventory item and likely low enough investment, it may not need much to justify being the broadcast partner.

I think we’re going to see a lot of second/third tier spectator sports suffer some potentially dire long term consequences of the media partnership decisions they’re making in this period. When you aren’t “must see tv”, making it difficult and expensive to access your product just means you’re putting a hard cap on your audience size (at best) and making it near impossible for new fans to discover the sport via easily accessed coverage.

Last year after the Olympics world Tri had a quite a few world cup races on free to watch would be interesting if that actually moved the viewership numbers?

Good summary, I wonder if it’s reality of keeping the adventure around. I know a decade ago in the U.S. they had the MLT (Major League Triathlon) pro race series, similiar to what ST is. FB live video, but did bring in Barrie Shepley who was great addition. It was truly mom/pop production, just trying to make it. So I can understand an race franchise jumping at a opportunity like this. But what does it do if no one watches it?

(I don’t mind paying X, but obviously if it’s Y, I’m out…and then it’s well if that’s for IM + T100 + ST + ITU; suddenly your “subscription fees” are adding up if all the pro series goes to that model)

I think it’s pretty likely that, in general, stuff like that doesn’t actually move the dial all that much but it probably helps around the margins and at least keeps people interested/pulls in some small number of new viewers.

The thing that a lot of the people making the financial decisions behind these rights partnerships seem to be undervaluing, though, is the one thing that free coverage absolutely does do; it creates the baseline conditions necessary for something like a Julie Moss or Ultimate Fighter finale moment to occur, and when that happens things are never the same again. Netflix (Drive to Survive) and Youtube are probably the only streaming services that have the sheer scale of viewership to allow for an impact like that in the current media environment.

Many people in the UK who had GCN then Discovery+ for pro cycling baulked at the increase from £7 to £31 pcm when it went to TNT sports and cancelled their subscriptions. Myself included.

Ive calmed down a bit and realised SL isn’t on all year round, so wouldn’t require a yearly subscription.

So im going to have a look at when the races actually are and if im free to watch it live and weigh up if its value for money for me to subscribe (also getting TDF)

UK sports fans also have the luxury of having to subscribe to Skysports, TNT is literally only half your football matches and sport, you can blame the players on 300k a week plus for this nonsense!

The announcement doesn’t actually say that the events will no longer be available through other channels (i.e., YouTube).

We’re all sort of assuming they won’t be, which is a reasonable assumption, but also not completely reasonable, unless they want to have 100 viewers per event? But then again, reasonable as Eurosport has got over 150 million subscribers, so I suppose the number of normal non-triathlon people watching Supertri “by accident” will be far larger than the number of AG triathletes, actively looking for the broadcast because they know what “GTB” means, ever was on YouTube.

Anyway, I’ll pay for the month if necessary, unless the VPN somehow saves me because they’re streaming for free in Vanuatu or sth.

I noticed that triathlon live has a place holder for supertri Toronto. So hopefully can watch it here on playback ( don’t need to watch it live)

Great news for SuperTri.

For some time, I have strongly believed and thought this is the BEST Triathlon Race Format for TV. Short. Fast. Dynamic. Lot’s of action from start-to-finish!

I am honored to have been asked to be part of the Live Announcing Team onsite for SuperTri as it makes it’s debut in Toronto this weekend! Really looking forward to immersing myself in this!

Hope it is better than previous years. Trying to create drama when there isn’t any.

It is a good format. Fast and punchy. No need to make it anything than it is. Haven’t seen all the team lists but it doesn’t seem as many high profile athletes as in the past. Particularly on the mens side.

I won’t be watching it. I refuse to pay 400 euros for 4 very short races on top of Prime, TriathlonLive, Netflix and VPN.

I think this is a killer for SuperTri. They weren’t high audience when it was free so ridiculously priced pay per view will have a drastic impact.

What on earth are you talking about?

There is quite a lot of high profile athletes.
Some under 23s too, which I think is a good idea, gives the young guns a chance
I’ll watch on triathlon live
Love supertri

It is one of the rules that one of the 4 athletes has to be U23

They’re saying it’ll be on Triathlon Live, although I’ve seen similar on Triathlon Live for T100 and it disappeared without a trace with no live race, so lets see what happens.

Can’t for the life of me find SuperTri on HBOMax and it’s supposed to be starting in 5mins. Next triathlon listed on HBOMax is T100 London.
