Superfrog Triathlon (1)

Who has done the Superfrog Half in San Diego? How was the race? It must be a tough course? Looking over the race times from last year, the times seem pretty slow for a Half Iron. It’s a beach run, I take it? Windy?

I’ve done it and here is a detailed report with photos. HIghly recommended:

Oh, I should have added:

This year’s event is April 7 and has moved from the Naval Special Warfare Center in the Naval Amphibious Base just south to Silver Strand State Beach. The move is primarily to accomodate the increased interst in the event and the addition of a second event run concurrently called “SuperSEAL”. SuperSEAL will be an Olympic distance triathlon run on the same course as Superfrog.

It’s a great race. I’ll see you there.

YIKES! Holy S**t, Tom! That explains the slow times! Great write-up.

I lived in San Diego for about 10 years, and went to college as SDSU. That’ll be a nice way to celebrate my homecoming with a splash (so to speak.) I do love that city.

If the Superfrog at half-Ironman distance is a trifle much for you at this time of year (it is for me) then consider the SuperSEAL. That’s what I’m doing.

Note that the course information for the event on their official website is actually the course from the previous year. The run does not go past SEAL Team 5 headquarters at the start of each lap and into the NSWC. This year the run is inthe Silver Strand State Beach area according to the website. This may be good news since the trail conditions are likely to be firmer. But then again, this is the Navy SEAL triathlon so you know they are going to do something to make it extra special…

I thought about that, and I still might do it. But if I’m going to travel all that way (from Ohio) with all my gear, I’m thinking I might as well do the half. I’ve stayed in relatively decent shape over the winter, but I would like to try to get in a few more long rides between now and then (if we’d ever get a break on the weather.)

Either way, with that course, I’m sure I won’t come close to my PR. It looks like a blast, though. And as an ex-Navy guy, I think it’ll be cool as hell to race with the SEALS.

The Military Channel actual had TV coverage for it. My TIVO picked it up one time. If it’s like many cable channels, they me replay it periodically. Looks tough.

I’m in the same position travelling from Michigan. It’s worth the trip. Such a cool race.

Great! I’ll look for you.

BTW, I noticed your time from last year ~ very respectable. How does that compare with your PR? My PR in a pancake flat, windless half is 5:02, and I’m wondering what I might expect in an early season, windy race with a sand run (probably about 5:30 to 5:40?)

I did the superfrog last year. It was my first HM distance race. The conditions last year were extremely rare and volatile. A very strong storm front blew in and created a really choppy swim with pretty strong surge. 50% of the bike was dead into the teeth of a 25 mph wind; the other 50% was pure tailwind. The run is about 60% on sand, with much of it being soft sand.

Normally the swim and run would be MUCH easier than in 2007. There’s generally a light breeze off the ocean in Coronado, but nothing near what we had last year.

Personally, I liked the race a lot. It still has a bit of a grass-roots feel as it’s kind of small, of course with that military flavor thrown in. With the race being moved off the base this year, I expect logistics will be improved. But it was pretty cool to race on the base and I would have liked it to stay there.

Cool! Sounds like my kind of race ~ if it’s miserable, at least it’s memorable!

Its a fun event, I have competed in the relay for the past 4 or so years

Closed bike course.

Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that you have WON the relay the last four years or so?

any idea what the water temp will be around the beginning of april?

From the water table, it looks like it’ll be around 58 or 59:

Same here. I’m signed up for SuperSEAL as prep for IMFL 70.3. Definitely looking forward to this one.
