everytime I go out to ride, or run, I end up with sunscreen in my eyes. to avoid this I started applying it even further away from my eyes, but it doesn’t help–especially on the bike, my eyes get dry and burn and literally I have to pull off and try to get the stuff out of my eyes with water.
what I’m using in the neutrogena active breathable 45 sunblock. i still get burned regardless of spf.
so, I’m wondering what sunscreen/block you’ve used that really works and doesn’t burn the eyes out.
I dont put any on my forehead and wear a hat. I also really wash my hands well after I apply it. Make sure to not wipe my face with my arm (so easy to do) and wear a “Headsweats” hat that makes an awesome towel too…
I have the same problem…I sweat alot, and no matter what I do I get sweat in my eyes on the bike (along with whatever sunscreen I have on. I tried HeadSweats, Halo, a bunch of products, but I find the thing that works best, is a cut off sleeve of a cotton t-shirt. Just seems to absorb everything. On some of my longer rides, I have to bring too, but they seem to work the best for keeping sweat out of your eyes.
Oh, and I use Coppertone Sport, doesn’t work all that well…going to have to try the bullfrog
One other thing - and this mainly applies to us older guys who look like two small rodents have climbed onto our foreheads to form our eyebrows - it helps to keep those eyebrows a little long, don’t trim them too much. Of course, I doubt if females will follow this advice.
Both Bullfrog and Kinesys make good spray-on sport sunblocks, spf 36-45. I am a pale redhead and they work for me without running into my eyes. Kinesys also sells small spray bottles that go nicely into a jersey pocket so you can reapply on long rides.
The other benefit is that since they’re not too greasy, the bugs don’t stick to your face so much.
Funny, I use this exact same block and I haven’t had those problems (still getting burned). How far in advance of your workouts are you applying? I usually try to apply 30 min. in advance so it is “soaked in” and not trickling down my face. I think that’s also the recommendation by sunscreen companies as far as applying so you don’t get burned. The alcohol-based sunscreens really sting on my skin so I can’t use those.
I use Coppertone Waterbabies SPF 45 sunblock. Its supposed to be waterproof and won’t sting/burn the eyes. I’ve been satisfied with it for a number of years.
I am fair skinned and perspire more than average, drips off my brow, and I have not been bothered by burning eyes from the sunscreen.
That said, I usually don’t put very much on my forehead because of my helmet and forehead sweatband. I am bothered more by getting sweat in my eyes.
I’ve been using Coppertone Waterbabies 45SPF exclusively for a while–it’s great. It doesn’t irritate my skin like some other sunscreens, doesn’t feel as greasy as some, plus it smells nice.
for those real long rides, try applying a coat the night before–provided you’re not planning on “getting some”–and then reapply in the morning. the dual coat tactic works well for longer workouts. a base layer soaks into the skin and changes its chemistry and the added morning coat is extra insurance.
i second/third/fourth bullfrog gel.
coppertone oil free is a good base layer the night before.
Me too (for the long rides and the not a dark tanner thing). Maybe it’s just a phsyiology thing…different solutions work better for diff. people I guess. I hope you find something that works!
hmmm…apply it at night? wow, i never would have thought to do that. it seems like it might be uncomfortable. well, maybe not with the lotion you suggested.
in any case, I’ll try it out. beats turning my skin into a leather handbag. also I might try sunscreen on my hair too–it’s getting way too white blond.
Get some ‘Lil Gator’ to use near your eyes. We put it right on our eyelids and it NEVER burns our eyes. And it stays on forever.
Banana Boat makes one call ‘Surf’ or something like that. It rarely stings and stays on all day, too. It has a little Titaniuim Dioxide alone with sunscreens, so it really keeps out the sun.
Superblock 45 by Bullfrog occasionally stings me, so I don’t put it near my eyes, but I NEVER get a burn with that stuff. We skiied in bright sun at Mammoth in April last year and we hardly got pink after a few days out there. It has even more Titanium dioxide (for all your wieght weanies…) along with the screens, so it BLOCKS!!!
I’ve heard great things about Kinesys, but have no experience.
