Summer Vacation

Besides Lake Placid can anybody give me some ideas on a great place to vacation. A place where the wife and baby can relax and good ole Daddy can get some quality training in. Some place with a pristine lake and some good riding would be a dream. Any ideas ST’ers

Wallyworld.

If you are in the northeast US, the best option is proabably Mount Desert Island in Maine.

Tons of stuff to do, and great riding/running/swimming opportunities.

Other great options are northern Vermont (try Lake Willoughby) and Maine (try Thompson Lake).

Absolutely. See my sig line - this is where I live in the summer. I move there for good on Friday afternoon and I cannot wait.

Swim: choice of lake and ocean. You can swim in Echo Lake, which is fairly calm water most of the time, with few boats. If you prefer salt water, I suppose you could start from Sand Beach or the Town Pier. I’ve never swum in the ocean for swim training before, as it is wicked cold and I didn’t have a wetsuit. I’ve got one now so this summer I will

Bike: the Park Loop road is ~20 miles, two lanes with one-way traffic. Everyone is very aware of cyclists and it’s very safe. Early morning and early evening are the best, less-trafficky times (during the day it’s swamped with tourists but you can still get around). A lot of cyclists ride up and down Cadillac Mountain (“cadillaps”) which is on that road. If you’re bored with that one loop (though it’s got so many beautiful views I don’t know how one could get bored of it…) then you can cycle all around the island; the roads are really good. Hilly… it is Maine. But you could cycle from Bar Harbor to Northeast Harbor to Southeast Harbor… all over the place.

Run: we have 55 miles of carriage trails. They are wide, soft, and gorgeous. Eagle Lake is the “must do” run, and is six miles around a very pretty lake (my run club does 6 at 6 - six miles six am eagle lake, almost every day in the summer). No roots or anything like that, they are very clean trails and they’re breathtakingly beautiful. You can start pretty much anywhere and create a run of pretty much any distance. If you want to run on pavement, the MDI marathon course starts in downtown Bar Harbor and has mile markers so you could follow that… also very pretty.

If you come to Bar Harbor, send me a PM and I will try to meet up with you to train  I happened to meet a triathlete by chance at an open water swim race last summer (he had an IMLP shirt on, so I introduced myself and asked if he were a ST’er  and we wound up swimming together for the two weeks that he was there.

oohhhh island summers are enchanted. I promised last summer that I’d post some pics of my summer playground and I never got to it; I’ll try to do so next weekend… it is fantastic…

oh, yeah - the other stuff in Bar Harbor - you said you’ve got a wife and child that would come too. There is so much stuff to do downtown: there’s a Bead Store, a Paint-Your-Own-Pottery place… the beach, the Shore Path (a mile along the ocean, good for walks, little beachy spots) - hiking trails all over the place, walking around town is fun, you can go on a whale watch or a sailboat (that’s touristy stuff  … all kinds of things to do!
