Currently on a 4 week european vacation with my girlfriend. I am american, she is english. Just finished begging her father for permission to marry her and he reluctantly relented(not too much money had to change hands).
We are leaving england tomorrow for a 3 week tour of Paris, Geneva and northern italy. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to pop the question? I have the ring but all I have been able to conclude in my small mind is to wait until the moment is right, whether it is at a small street side cafe or a stroll along the seine. I have heard a rumor that you can actually climb to the top of the arc de triomphe, if this is true has anyone done the trip?
I am fairly certain she will say yes and am only looking to make the moment perfect for her. But being an anal triathlete I will wait until the perfect moment and miss it waiting for a better moment. I have to ask before we return to london or the check I gave her father will have bounced.
If you want to be cliche, propose at the Eiffel Tower. I proposed to my wife on the steps of the Sacre Couer. Romantic. Beautiful. Overlooks Paris from the hill.
Be aware, I’ve heard urban legends about people who propose marriage atop the Eiffel Tower return to commit suicide after a failed marriage.
That said, both destinations are wonderful. A picnic of wine, cheese and baguette on a blanket along the Seine at dusk within sight of Notre Dame is awesome. Same thing along Lake Geneve near the Jet d’Eau is nice also. In Montmarte near the Sacre Coure was a little cafe in '96 called ‘Rosebud’ as in the name of the sled in the movie Citizen Kane. Very small, but romantic as all of France late at night after all the Bohemians are run off the steps of the Sacre Coure. The Left Bank was very American friendly in '96. Very ethnic and English spoken.
I found that when Parisians leave Paris on Holiday, tourists have the run of Paris as those Parisians who stay behind still need to make a living. Learn some French words or better yet, buy yourself a pocket translator and learn whole phrases. If you try a little it’s appreciated greatly. Bon Voyage et Bon Chance!

Walk around Paris all day, cover a ton of distance, be completely exhausted and drag yourself back to your hotel. There, while you are both covered in the muck of walking around a big city all day, nearly passing out from exhaustion as you are sitting in the room, propose. It’ll show you still want to be with her when things aren’t perfect.
To be honest, I had a lot to do with my proposals, the last months, and I didn’t “googled” from a very long time… It’s interesting to know what people say about proposals in Paris, and how they are planning to create a romantic event by themselves. And it’s interesting, and sometimes a little mysterious for me, to understand why so many people are planning to pop the question at the Eiffel tower… Don’t forget that when you are at the Eiffel tower, you DON’T see the Eiffel tower!
Congrats! I waited for what I thought was the right place and moment. After dinner along the Seine after the sun had set we sat down on a bench on Ile St. Louis and then I get down on one knee. Perfect…for a while until one of those huge Bateaux Mouches tour boats lit us up like a guard tower lighting up an escaped prisoner. We still laugh.
You can walk up to the top of the Arc de Triomphe. We went during the day. Not sure how it would be at night but during the day you get the traffic noise from a dozen or so streets that intersect here.
Now the Catacombes would be an interesting and creepy place to pop the question.
If the flowers are blooming the Jardin des Tuileries would be romantic. Then you could walk over to the Place de la Concorde, check out the two water fountains (they seem much larger on TV during the Tour) ride the ferris wheel and go over to the Crepe stand for a crepe avec Nutella.
If you are looking for an out of the way small restaurant check out Le Laurier at 24 Rue Didot (take the Pernety exit on the 13 Metro Line). You can’t go wrong with the Confit du Canard, foie gras, mellieux chocolat, Kir Royal, etc. Very nice staff, decorated with painting from area artists and if you just try some of your French language they’ll love you. This is in the 14th Arrondissement.
