Suggestions for first Half-IM, and IM

Howdy all,

Planning on doing my first (and mebbe 2nd) half-IM in '05, with dreams and aspirations of my first IM* in '06.

*(seems like a better and cheaper mid-life crisis strategy than buying a red sports car anyway)

I live about an hr N. of NYC, so in a perfect world, I’d like to stick w/ relatively “local” (under say 5-6 hrs of driving) races, to minimize the impact on my family, etc.

So, for the '05 Half options, 2 I am considering are:

** the new Harriman IronTri in May '05 (Harriman is almost right out my back door, but, it’s a kinda hilly bike course), and

** the Timberman in August '05.

(The Tinman at Tupper Lake would be a good one, but, it’s the same weekend as my wife’s B-day, so I know it would not be choosing wisely to partake in that one. I like being married, wanna remain that way.)

As for the '06 IM options, the 2 I’ve come up w/ so far are:

** IMLP, (I’ve got a buddy who has a house in Keene Valley to stay at) and,

** The Great Floridian (my Mum-in-law lives down in “God’s waiting room”, so I/we could stay w/ her, and we could make it a family vacation of sorts, do Disney, etc.)

Other? Suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Do IMLP and become an Ironman. Otherwise you’re a “140.6”, and that’s not as much fun to say.

Great half-IM links all, thx!

Anybody have any ideas for an IM for '06?

(I realize the actual dates aren’t likely out yet for that far in advance, but a race name and location and month it typically occurs would be a huge help)

I guess the Cheasapeakeman Ultra is another “local” IM worth considering. Any more?

!Muchas gracias!

Agreed! A little bragging rights (that non Tri-geeks would actually even understand) certainly isn’t a bad thing. And, it’s the closest big race to home for me to boot.

As for IMs… LP is a great one, challenging but the natural beauty and the crowds are just GREAT. I hear Canada is LP times 10… so another one to think of… that’s on the last weekend of August usually and you need to find someone to sign you up (www.ironman.ca).

Wisco is in September and everyone I know that has done, really like it.

I hear Brazil is also a great one and can be done cheap through Ken Glah’s travel package… That’s in May… www.endurancesportstravel.com and www.ironmanbrazil.com

As for non M dot races:

Hope this helps!

too bad you can’t do tupper lake - it’s a great race. i’ve heard great things about mussleman too - i plan to do it next year. i second the recommendations for lake placid in 06 - i’ll see you there.

i grew up in westchester county - where are you?
