Suggestions for bike routes and races in St Augustine, Florida

I’m going to do some cycling in St Augustine, Florida this March 11 - 19 and have a few questions for locals:

  1. Are there any training races or fast group rides going on during that time?

  2. Any suggestions for nice cycling routes? I’m looking for routes from 15 miles through 80 miles.

  3. Any suggestions for hilly routes?

  4. Any suggestions for websites or clubs I could contact for more information on riding in the area.

Thanks in advance,

Marc

I can answer #3. Hilly routes? It’s St. Augustine, FL, man??? May be some dunes???

Seriously, I used to live in Jax. There’s no hills in St. Augustine.

I was thinking about driving North to Georgia to find hills.

Call Paul at http://innoncharlotte.com he’s a multiple IM guy, bike nut and general good guy. He’s owned B&Bs in St. A for years and is sure to know the best places.

Here are a few possibilities for you:

Sat

7:00 AM A
20-60 Miles St. Augustine From Hooters on 312 west of US-1, 18 - 26 mph Nancy, Matt, or Paul at (904) 461-5557.

Sat

7:30 AM B/A
25-40 Miles San Jose From OPEN ROAD BICYCLES at Miramar Plaza, Scott @ 904-636-7772.

I would definitely give Scott at Open Road a call – that group has a lot of racers and he’ll hook you up – they also have some rides during the week.

I would also suggest you call Jeanne at Lakeshore Cycle & Fitness in Jacksonville (904-260-1126). She would probably be more than happy to provide you with cue sheets for some of the local rides, particularly the World Golf Village ride (probably the closest route to where you’ll be staying) – there are 2 routes, 39 and 50 miles.

If you want hills in Florida (well, more like speed bumps) head down to Clermont. Maybe contact the Florida Freewheelers (http://www.floridafreewheelers.com/) – they organize the Horrible Hundred which takes in all the local “mountains” and they may be able to e-mail you a cue sheet. Their website has a variety of route maps (but not cue sheets) for other rides in the Clermont area as well as other areas around central Florida.

You might also check out the Windermere Roadies group (http://www.windermereroadies.com/) and the North Florida Bicycle Club (http://www.nfbc.us/).

Hope this helps!
