Suggestions - Crewing for friends 50mi run

I am the 1 man crew for my friend’s 50mi race this weekend. Any advice from people that have done this in the past? it is his 1st 50mi race and the 1st time I have ever done something like this. The race is the Whitewater 50mi

Some things to consider:

At some point he may want to change shoes and socks. Think about an extra pair of shoes and at least 2-3 pairs of socks.

Have a good cooler with a lot of ice in it.

Think about boiling up some potatoes and having them available for him. Make sure they have some salt on them.

Bring an extra bandana into which you can roll up ice to keep him cool

Have a blister kit avaliable

Two words - chocolate covered espresso beans

Endurolytes, extra gels, Sport Beans, or Cliff Shot Blocks

Hope this gives you a start,

Jason

PS - The race should already provide most of this.

Great suggestions! I sent him these to see if he knew if they race had them

Realize that when he gets downright bitchy, it’s not personal.

clm - knowing that you are an InfinIT-kinda gal…have you done an ultra relying mostly on InfinIT? That’s my plan…with some selective grazing at the aid stations. I just haven’t used it more that long running. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I used infiniT at a 50K earlier this year. It was a looped course so we passed our drop bags twice. In between, I carried a bottle and then had premeasured powder in a pocket. I supplemented that with aid station fare (potatos and chips mostly). Worked really well and I finished about 30 minutes faster than I had planned to.

Not to hijack this thread but I have a question for anyone with experience. I’ve run two ultras, on pavement. I’m doing my first trail 50-mile ultra this weekend. Almost all of my training has been on pavement and gravel roads…what can I expect my lower body to feel like since I have almost no trail running under my belt this year? I’m thinking my ankles will be pretty sore due to twisting, etc. Any suggestions or info. is very much appreciated. Thanks.

Anticipate sore ankles and hips and bruised toes. Also, expect to have a slower time than you’re used to.

Could you post a follow-up after the run? I’m (tentatively) planning on doing a 50-mi run later in fall… I’ll see if I can coerce any of my friends to be my sherpa

Are you planning to be his pacer too?

Sure thing!

Pacer no, i don’t think this race allows pacers. i was convinced pretty easily though, my friend is paying for everything, plane, hotel, car, etc…
