Hello–if i plop a sufferfest video into trainer road and tell TR my ftp, will it provide me with a goal wattage for each interval?
Yes.
And when you open up TR and drop your video in it will remember the location of that video so when you open it in the future you won’t need to direct it to the video again.
And then, the combination of Trainerroad and Sufferfest will kick your a$$ so much that you’ll want to come back again and again.
great, that will be a little motivator for me
.
oh, followup question. Can i move those video files off to an external drive and have them still run ok?
Yes, that will work. I’ve done that. The quality of the experience depends on how you connect to the network share. If you’re hard wired i.e. via usb or ethernet cable, no issues at all. If you’re accessing it via wireless, it’ll depend on the speed of your wireless network. I have challenges streaming HD via wireless so I tend to just stick them local on my laptop or make sure the external drive is plugged into my laptop for a no-jitter experience. I’d say try it, but it will definitely work, just may be choppy depending on network and how you’re accessing it. Have fun.
I’ll just get some sort of external usb drive, that should work ok? It’s just my hard disk is getting kind of full

Actually, for me, TR+Sufferfest = so much pain that I ended up not riding Sufferfest more than several times a season, down from many times a season, as it got too depressing to keep missing the power targets in the last 10 minutes.
Those power targets are hard. I wouldn’t feel bad if you miss them - I did for awhile, but now I know they’re just tough power targets.
If you are missing your power targets, then your FTP is set too high. There’s no fooling Nate and Reid.

it’s OK to modify the workouts, it’s just numbers on the screen. I did the 2 hour one today and hit some nice tempo numbers for 60 minutes of work in a 2 hour session, I was very happy with that outcome. I like having to vary the pace during efforts, that made it tougher but less tedious.

Not with Sufferfest. They’re just deadly hard workouts, plain and simple. You really have to be pushing to near-max, if not max, to hit the powertargets in a lot of those videos. I do the 2 x 20 FTP tests, and it’s never been otherwise. I’d say if anything you’re FTP is too low if you find you’re surviving them all the time and even doing them more than once per week without dread.

With TR you can adjust the % of the workout. Too hard, try it at 95% or 90% or whatever to get you through the workout.

TR + Sufferfest + Wahoo KICKR = the ultimate. TR will automatically set the KICKR at the target power # and all you do is pedal. It basically ERG mode adjusts itself for each interval.
i’m intrigued by the kickr, i used a flow ergo for a number of years and saw great improvements. I’m using the e-motion rollers, which i like a lot too, but I do like having to work against the set load.

I got myself a Wahoo Kickr on Black Friday. I did my first ride on it yesterday. I’m looking forward to the devil’s triangle of Trainerroad + Sufferfest + Wahoo Kickr workouts in 2014.
So if I have a computrainer is it worth also buying this additional combo of trainer road and sufferfest? Am I really going to get that much more than my already preprogrammed erg files?
Is this a better idea than the erg videos or just something new to help pass the boredom inside in the winter?

Pretty similar to Erg Videos, but I think erg videos in general are a little easier based on the same wattage settings. For Sufferfest, I almost always have to dial down the settings a bit as they are too hard, whereas with Erg Videos, I find they are often a little too easy (but ideal for threshod/tempo workouts).
If you don’t want to bother with Trainer Road, you can just use the free excel spreadsheet for Sufferfest videos that is out there. It makes an erg file that you just start at the same time you start the video. Does the same thing as Trainer Road, but for free. (http://viewsoftheroad.com/sufferfest-on-a-computrainer-version-3/)
i think at some level you have to use your own brain and decide what sort of workload you want to push at this point in the year. I’m not going to overdo a workout just because some icon on the screen says i have to go all out.
that said i was sore from that 2 hour sufferfest endurance session with the long climbing I did yesterday, it was a great indoor workout. For an hour block of tempo, I was at maybe 89% of my FTP. close enough for government work, plus some nice blasts over 400, which is suspect is what made me a little sore.
Which Sufferfest video did you do?
