Sub 5min mile

I was at the track doing my intervals today. I have run a few sub 5minute miles in my life but its been 9 years since the last one that last specifically calculated purposeful mile race. I now train mainly for half marathon half Ironman distance. Is a 4:?? something worth anything even if its just for fun? I mean do people care other than that little person in your head saying “yeay I can do that.” Prove it. Just to do it. (thats my logic speaking)
How many people can just run under 5minutes on just a given track workout anytime when fitness is just going well. I am not talking about training to break 5, I have had good intervals, fast intervals but never finishing it to see what a true real 4 laps 1600 meter time was. I can say Yeay I ran so and so for 2 or 3 laps or 1,000 in 2:57 during a track workout. but it doesnt count until all 1600meters have been run.
Today-I did 5x1200 negative split down to 3:45, when on the 6th one, I went for it. I went for that sub 5minute barrier. 5:00.26. (crap:(
Oh I will be back, I will run 4:??, Even if race pace for a half does not require that. I will do it within the week. Probably wont do 5x1200 before hand. What can you do Today, this week. This fitness level. Are you ready for race season? Do something crazy, a bit out of your comfort zone. Just to say you can. once in a while you have to kill it, and when you get real close, it gives you a little more purpose, desire, drive. Not to deraile you, just to push you. Just to know “You can if you want to” Nobody seems to care what you did but what you can do now. you dont have to wait for a race to have a (this age-PR), just go to the track and hurt yourself a little bit more than usual. Did it hurt? yea but it was good.
see you at the races!

I think its cool. Does it really diminish it that much if you have to train to do it?? I would have to train very hard to do it.

I care

I will be officially impressed if you do it again =)
.

I hate to break it to you but a mile is ~1609 meters. There should be a line on the track a bit behind the finish line indicating the start for the mile but if not just back up a first down or so before you start next time…

Of course if you just wanted to run 1600m in under 5min, thats fine, too

I will be impressed even if he just does 1600 in under 5 =)
.

If he REALLY wants to impress us, he should do 2000 in under 5. That would be pretty sweet.

Nah… I’d need to see *at least *3200m in under 8min to begin to be impressed.

In highschool, I used to do a 16 minute mile. Now that is something to be proud of.

I will be impressed even if he just does 1600 in under 5 =)
no, he can’t…hmm…no way…not happening. If I can’t do it, he can’t either!

In my middle school, 16 minutes was the cutoff time before you were declared obese or inept or something (and thus had to run more miles). If you were doing 16 min pace on purpose, I’d just say you were being as efficient as possible.

Than I shall, and I know its 1609 but its the evenness of it (is evenness a word?).
Either this thursday or next tuesday, I will post my data. Or hell just stop by Longmont HS in CO you’ll see me.
And i will do the extra 9 meters if that pleases you.
Maybe once a year I should do that years PR test. mile,2mile,5k,10k Hell I’ll even do 13.1miles on the track. its only 52 1/2 laps. do you have an 1:15 to spare?
That would be sweet!! Just might need someone to help me count laps. toss me some water here and there.

Hey,
I’m out on vacation in Washington DC right now, but if you’re willing to wait until next Tuesday, I’d love to join in the workout. It’d be fun to go out and do a 1-mile test, just for curiosity’s sake.

Also, I figure it can’t hurt to have some pacing help, right?

GReat.
Track work, Tuesday 9am Longmont Hs 10th and Francis.
I assume you will join me in the 4:?? mile.
Anyone else would be great,
I believe the weather should be tolerable too.
Thanks

Nice! Sounds like fun. Although I can’t guarantee I’ll join you in the 4:?? mile. It might end up being a 5:?? mile for me. Only one way to find out though, right?

We used to do a “Fastest Mile” workout every year during our late-season taper back in high school cross country. It was a hoot to see just how hard you could push yourself over the shorter distance. We’d break out the track spikes and everything. There were always some surprising results, since basically none of us had really run a targetted mile since the previous track season (or at least since Hershey, AAU, or Badger State Games several months earlier).

well maybe we can hlp each other push it for 800-1200 and see where we are.
37sec per 200,quarter in 74’s. Then last lap just put the hammer down.
Sounds easy enough right? hell I was 16 running under 5, by 15seconds. Now its amazing how challenging it is. but now, 1mile. 4 laps, It hurts, but it can be done.
But its nice to know you have that if you want it.

I can’t justify why, but I would also like to break a 5 min mile (1600m). I can probably run a 10k faster now than when I was in high school, but I don’t know if that translates to a faster mile.

What other distances and times have you done recently? Anything that would give you a VDot near 59? My highest is a 50 from a marathon last week and a 5k last year, but I think the 24:43 four mile race would be a higher vdot if that distance was listed. Maybe I’m farther away than I think.

Funny, as it was 10 minute mile was the cut off at my school. If you missed the cutoff, you had to stay after and try again. I was the guy that volunteered to run after school to make sure the one fat guy would break 10 minutes. He rarely did, but I managed to go 9:54 backwards trying to pace him. I wish I was young like that\ again.

WEll
Wherever you are on Tuesday morning, get a nice warm up, some accelerations to work on pace, and Go for a mile FAST see what comes up. Better yet get a friend to do it and push you on it as well. Hell, go to track practice with the HS kids at 3pm and see if the coach will let you do a TT with some kids, have the girls 4x800 team pace you for one lap at a time. they can manage a few 74’s around the track without making it too big a workout for them. sometimes a little audience gets you a little bit faster, not necessarily racing, just the watching, Having someone say Hey -that persons workin it, that persons going for it, you dont see that everyday, Float down the backstretch, press on the turns, your legs chewing up meters and feet, like a crazed packman. Run like the demons are chasing you, like your the star athlete, like your in the race to WIN it. Run like you want to and like you dream of doing. Feel the power, the speed and know that you are reaching your personal untouchable abilities. Put the hurt on, suprise yourself and go home and smile, and know you went so hard you know you did good.
That would be sweet if on one day the SAME day, we could get most all slow twitchers out to go for a mile, I mean All out nothing left, blinding white, seering pain, leg numbing, mind crumbling, lung busting, heart tachycardiating, Just to say you can do it. No excuses, no more I think I could do that, just show up and do it.
As far as races? I havent raced since Hawaii, at which point I sucked tremendously.
I am training for a half marathon in CO in May 17 and some smaller duathlons and races before then, but Half marathons the goal in may then the triathlon series and duathlon series. Vdot? I havent raced for a while, so not sure what Vdot would be. Hawaii I survived I didnt race. I have a TT 4miler coming up soon maybe I can use that as my Vdot.
No more Im’s for me (4 is fine) unless My daughter asks me to do one with her, but I got time as she is just 19months old.
let me know how you do in your mile
