Sub-3 Marathon Run + Sub-3 Marathon Swim...on same day?

How many triathletes or endurance athletes can do a sub-3 marathon run and a sub-3 marathon swim (10 km without a wetsuit)? On the same day? Over a weekend? During one week? During one month? Over a one-year period or over the course of one’s career? The swimming community has been challenging themselves for a few years. A few swimmers have come close, but not quite joined the Sub-3 Squared Club.

Not me. But I bet I could do a 5k swim and a 1/2 marathon in under 3 hours. What do I win?

Most of the pro men present at Kona could do that in a single day if not a single event.

…

would be great if this was an actual event.

I’d watch that. Maybe a nice battle between Potts and Frodeno.

Agreed. This would be a neat event.

I think I could do it, though I’ve never actually swam 10k before or ran a marathon…

…12…12 can do it…

Ditto…although I do think I did 100x100s and it took about 3 hours

I think a lot of people could do this in one day - all the pros and a slew of age group men at kona. Doing both consecutively in under 6 hours would be much more of a challenge.

I had about a 20 year period where i could have done them both in one day (23 to 43), maybe a 5 year period where i could have done them back to back. But i was a pro triathlete during that time with pretty good open water skills. Non wetsuit hawaii times were 50/51 with an open marathon of 2;36. Like others have said, most pros now could do it too, with maybe a few AG’ers.

I was going to complete the sub 3 squared this offseason (triathlon off season) but could not do the swim because it was unexpectedly in the 40s in Houston two weeks ago. I’ll have the run done January 24th, and do the swim sometime next year.

I could do I back to back if the run is first. I think - for most people - that would be easier.

Most pro triathletes could do it back to back. There’s no incentive though - it’s a pretty massive training day. Very few people run a marathon in training.

I think I might be able to do it, but I’d have to swim first, and would probably need a good snack in between. I haven’t raced a marathon, but I did 22.5 in 2:15 as one of my harder long runs last year, and it’s been a few years, but I’ve done 100x100’s under 3 hours with no sense of urgency. These days I’m pretty weak without a wetsuit though, so I think I think doing it in ow would be tough. I rarely hit 10k in a week, so I think if I attempted it now, I’d probably drown. Plus Walden Pond is freezing this time of year

If I get to pick the course, no problem.
I can make our local 2.5 mile OWS in the Tennessee River in 35’ on most Friday mornings.

Really, I’m surprised this is all that rare. I guess that shows just how poorly I estimate what it takes to swim 10k in 3hrs.

maybe do the run first so you can start on a summing and run down to a river.
