S'twitchers at Ironman Calgary 70.3?

Race week is here, conditions are shaping up to be ideal (forecast of 24 C and sunny with light winds for Aug. 2).

1700 athletes in this sold out race, surely there’s a few more 'twitchers than me in the mix - isn’t it time to talk this race up a bit?

I’ll be there, 18-24. Hopefully that forecast holds up that would be an awesome day. I’m really looking forward to this race its my first half. Really solid bike course, I checked it out a couple of weeks ago. Should be fun.

I will be there participating in the M40-44.

Any thoughts on the bike course? Hilly, fast?

I’ll be there… hearing lots of dire predictions from my buddy that lives out there and has ridden the course a few times! Did I mention it’s 5km long as far as I can tell?

Despite that I am looking forward to it. This is a return to the lifestyle for me after a couple years of seriously doggin’ it, so I am cautiously optimistic for at least a day that ends with a smile.

I may complain about the early morning bus ride out to ghost lake, but I’ll be there. 18-24m

I live out in Cochrane close to the swim… Water temp is very warm (for ghost lake) approx 18-19 degrees. Know a bunch of guys going out to swim tonight and can report back later.

Bike course is challenging…climb all the way up Grand Valley Road but then mostly down Horse Creek ( new pavement)…good climb out of Cochrane heading south also. Good bike course and can be tough with strong east or south winds. if its a north or west wind will be a fast course. What will the wind be??? Normal wind for this time of year is light SE however we have had alot of everything this year. One thing for sure its the same for everyone!

I’m very much looking forward to the race. It’ll be my first half.

Some other people I know doing this were talking about buying those wet-suit swim caps that go under your race cap for extra heat…Sounds a bit much to me. Is the lake that cold?

I’ll be helping out at T2 paying it back. Good luck all. Weather here has been great but as you know it can change in a minute.

I did that at Muskoka LC this year and the water was cooler than Ghost Lake will be. After 10 mins of swimming all I could think about was how badly I wanted to take the cap off it was so hot. Once you get moving you should be fine, especially with a suit on.

Jealous

Can’t make it… but am looking forward to having a go of it in the future.

Colorado Rockies, Canadian Rockies… it don’t matter… it’s MOUNTAINS!!!

I’m signed up, but unfortunately I will not be racing due to an injury that has caused me to miss the last couple months of training.
I will be volunteering at T2 instead. I hope everyone has a great race!

Pretty excited about doing it. It will be my 2nd Half IM. The run will be nasty with the 2 big ascents (and descents) in and out of the Weasel head area. M 35 - 39

I wouldn’t call it challenging… maybe “fair”.

I guess most courses are pussied pancake flat these days though…

By my knowledge of the winds in Calgary… and the forecast… it should be ideal for fast bike splits.

I’ll be racing.

It would if the bike course was not almost 3 miles too long. Oh well, everybody has to do the same course.

Oh No! 3 Miles! How will I ever be able to complete an extra 3 Miles!?!?!?

LOL!!!

You never know, it could be the difference between running and walking

It is the bike splits that I was commenting on, not the ability/inability to complete the ride.

Yeah… but you can’t compare course to course, to year to year anyways…

Wife is doing this race.

The logistics of this event is just simply impressive.

Expo closes at 6pm on Friday and 1pm on Saturday.

Expo is located at host hotel which is downtown and nowhere near race venue (either swim OR run).

Seems like they should’ve had a meeting with the folks from Muskoka 70.3.
