This is lame but I hate using the crack pipe! It leaks like mad and it takes 2 people to pump up my Zipp disc. The cut-out is also too small to fit in the tiny micro-flate CO2 cartridge thing so if I flat my zipp disc - I need to attach the crack pipe to the Co2 gizmo and try to get that to work all alone (assuming I’m in a race or on the road)? I haven’t tried it but have my doubts…
Am I doing something wrong? Are all crank pipes so lame? Am I lame? How do you fill a flat in a race?
The micro-flate thing fits fine in a Renn cut-out…points to Renn…though the Zipp looks cooler…
Are you sure you haven’t worn out the gasket in the crack pipe? Also, how high a pressure are you using? I can usually get 120 psi solo and I weigh 71 kg. Unless you weigh a whole lot, don’t think you need much more than that.
My micro-inflate, which I just purchased recently, fit’s with a little muscle and pushing the valve out to the side a little to slip that bastard in there… I’m using zipp tires so maybe it’s the brand of tire and the length of the valve which make the difference. I haven’t flatted yet on the disc yet. I agree someone needs to make a Co2 attatchment which is designed with a crack pipe extension.
I inflate all my race wheels to 170lbs, alone. One hand on the crack pipe and the other on the pump. My race wheels are HED3’s and an HED3D disc.
I use a CO2 microflate for flats and never had a problem. I used to use a very small series of old pump hose and attachments attached to a crack pipe that I could attach to the end of the CO2 microflate to use during flats on the road. It worked great, until it fell off the back of my saddle during a ride and was never seen again.
There was an earlier thread on this topic. There are two styles of “crack pipes.” One has a lower head profile and it clears the opening on the Zipp. However, I believe it is an older style and may be hard to find. Once I realized I had the same problem, I traded the higher profile one to another cyclist for the low version.
“You know you are getting old when you see your father in the mirror.” anon.
The 170 is per Zipps recommendations for their tires. Zipp has stated, round aboutly, that their tires are meant to be run with a higher tire pressure. AND its a mental thing…hard tires=fast!! AND I’m not going to get into an arguement over this whole thing about Tufo tires, Zipp tires and low pressure being lower resistance…I don’t care…I do this for all for fun!!!
The name is Zipp because I own 2 Zipp 2001 bikes. One for racing and one for training. They are set up exactly the same.
YOu need 2 people? Why? I dont get it…buy a Silca pump and be done with it…oh, and the pump will last you for the rest of your life too.
I have a Zipp disk and the silca head wont fit in the cut out, so I have the same problem as Dave does - jamming my thumb in the opening (even with new pipes/gaskets) and using the other hand to pump.
As for Zipp recommending 170 pounds, joshatzipp was posting a few weeks ago that he recommends 125 pounds - anything over that actually has higher rolling resistance due to tread seperation. I believe him.

By the way, great bikes!! Too bad those bastards at USCF made them illegal for TTing next year. I went and bought a Kuota to go with my jet black Zipp 2001.
I do not have a Silca pump, and my crack pipe blows of the valve unless my son holds it on while I pump. Also, my gauge does not register when using the pipe. Will the Silca pump solve both issues?
As stated above…I don’t care…I like them hard as a rock! Find it VERY hard to believe that the contact patch with rolling resistance is larger with more pressure. I’ll stick to the mental part of this whole equation…I’m not a pro…won’t claim to be…this is ALL for fun…last time I checked my bank account I’ve never won a single penny doing tri’s.
The only USCF race I do each year is the FL State TT, right here in St Augustine. I run the Open Division and the don’t care what bike you use. There’s no championshipp, no money, no points in the Open Division.
When I get home from the Inn I’ll post a pic of my twin Zipps. Both brand new about 1 year ago. Bought them both from the guy that worked for Zipp and hand made all the frames. They were still in the original bubble wrap and Zipp boxes!!
I’ve used the same silca pump for 14 years. I’ve replaced the guts in it twice (about $10 each time). It’ll work with a crack pipe to really high pressures!! : )
I think you sent me the guy’s email a while back. I emailed him and he still had one or two left in the bubble wrap, and was selling them for $600 a piece I think. I almost bought one, but decided to upgrade my black Zipp to 10 speed DA instead. It’s a great bike, but it climbs like my grandma!
So you think that the Hed people will get mad you have Zipp stickers on their wheels…or maybe the Zipp people that they are on Hed…either way…your seat is to high, get some paint with color - get the door first, and try to get someting in those picture frames other than just glass.
The pics are aluminum and look really good in the 4 matching frames…so There!! Besides… they belong to the wife and I’m NOT touching them.
The door doesn’t belong to me…we rent this apartment next door to the Inn, and its above a French Bistro!! I’m not paintin’ nothin’ thats not mine!! So there…again!! : )
Those wheels are Zipp prototype, not HED…not due out until at least…forever!! : ) They’ll be VERY expensive when they are produced in extremely limited quantity sometime in the future.
