Stupid pedal question : for the bike experts

Which are the best:

Time RSX

Shimano SPDSL

Speedplay Zero

I’m buying this week to replace my worn-out Speedplay X pedals. I’m a spinner, not a masher; no medical/physio issues to consider. I ride about 125-150 miles/week.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have used just about every pedal system on the market (although not the zero’s have used x series).
Have used:Look (two pairs), Keywin (all road models), time (equipe, RXS), Speedplay (x series), Bebop, SPD, SPD-R, SPD-SL

Your deffinetly on the right track:

Time RXS -best pedal ever (even better than the time equipe in my opinion).
Stable, good “natural” feeling float.
-also light but I don’t think this is terrible important, its just a bonus.

SPD-SL
-In the 105 verision the best “budget” pedal on the market
Very stable fantastic design.
Float is a little sloppy-this is what makes the time RXS a better pedal.
The second best pedal on the market -well for me anyway

I would only be considering these two pedals, get the spd-sl(105) if your on a budget or the time RXS if you can afford them. In my opinion both are a huge step ahead of anything else currently avaliable.

What is wrong with Look? I have some c6 and they are fine what am I missing?

I’m not very familiar (I haven’t owned a set)with the current look (the keo).

My critisisms of the older style look pedals are:

The float is inconsistent- sometimes its quite free sometimes its stiff. It also feels a little unnatural pivoting around a point well in front of the pedal rather than under your foot.
The cleat design is a problem as well, the main wear point when walking is also the main contact point with the pedal (not so with time, spd-sl, speedplay etc). Any wear on the cleat in this area destabilises the shoe/pedal interface.
I think the look pedal was a great when it first came (1984?)out but newer, better designs have come out starting with the time equipe.

That said the look pedal is still one of the most common pedals in use in competitive cycling at all levels and if your hips, knees, ankles etc are happy with them then they are absolutely fine. Some of us just have rather fussy knees which demand a bit more attention.
