Student drivers: expect the unexpected

I had a nice hard two hour ride (only my third on the open road with my new Cervelo Dual) come to an abrupt end in an encounter with a student driver.

I’m cruising along, only a mile left to home, relieved to be on one of the few stretches with something resembling a bike lane, when I notice a Jeep Cherokee two lanes over matching my speed and then ever so slowly pulling ahead of me.

Suddenly it veers into me as it makes a hard right turn from the middle lane – it was so deliberate and unexplainable, that I could only imagine that it was intentional and that the driver was some kind of rabid anti-cyclist psychopath

I break and swerve hard before getting plastered onto the side of the vehicle, which eventually stops, throwing me onto the ground.

All I could think (and say apparently) was, “Why did you do that? Why did you do that? Why did you do that?” Luckily, I suffered only minor cuts and bruises and my beloved bike wasn’t permanently damaged.

Well, it turns out it was a student driver and her mother, not the jack-booted thug I was anticipating.

The young girl apparently saw me before she turned, but as her mother put it, “she hasn’t developed good judgement yet”. Ah… you think.

Both mother and daughter appeared to be more shaken up by the incident than me (not helped by the fact that I kept falling down when I tried to stand, which they didn’t realize had more to do with the two hour hard ride, a sloped driveway, and my cycling shoes than it did with the accident

Oh well, inspired by my encounter with one of the vehicles that I must humbly share the road, I designed a “triathlete crossing sign” (http://iconicwit.com/tri), which I think I’m going to wear on my back from now on.

Ride safely out there and expect the unexpected,
Bam Bam

A similar thing has happened to me several times with pedestrians on an urban bike path. They look at me, they see me coming and then step right in front of me. And most of them appear to be experienced walkers.

Glad you and your bike are fine

NICE SIGN!! I’m using on my desktop!!!

When my daughters got their licenses I told them that they were legal, but they weren’t safe.!!!

good story. glad youre ok. and neato sign.
