Stress Fractured Femur

One of the members in my training group claims to have a stress fracture in her femur. Yet she continues to bike and swim, but no running. This is apparently taking place under the supervision of a doctor, but I am very skeptical of a doctor that would allow a patient to continue with physical activity considering the possibilities of generating a VERY bad injury. Anyone out there know if she has received sound medical advice???

I continued to bike when I had a stress fracture in my Femur. I also swam. My Dr. wouldnt let me MTB though.

I healed fine.

I also continued to bike while healing my femoral stress fracture, but it was against my doctor’s wishes. In retrospect, it took approx. 6-8 weeks longer to fully heal vs. had I stayed off of it completely as advised. The wise choice for her would be to stay off of it.

Yep, that sounds right. I’ve had two and have been able to continue everything but running.

It depends on the type of stress fracture - femoral neck vs shaft, and compression vs distraction side of femur. There are compression sided neck fractures that you could probably be OK with riding on.

I was allowed to swim and thats it.

That is actually also what Chris Lieto is going through and what prevented him from qualifying and racing in Kona.
