My neighbor described this to me but seeing is really believing. An older gentleman running up a steep hill dragging a car tire tied to his waist with a rope. And he’s been seen doing this over a pretty wide area east of Seattle. Hmmmmm, the more I think about it, this might be a good way to shock my system into better times. I know there have been sightings of other weird workouts. Let’s hear 'em.
About three times a year a group of us will go down to the beach and do this awesome work-out. I am sure it looks pretty bizarre to the tourist walking the beach at daylight.
Usually about 10-12 people split into teams of two sharing with one beat up mountain bike per team. One person will start running down the beach and the other will start riding the bike shortly afterwards. The biker will ride about 10 yds past the runner drop the bike and start running. The first runner will then pick up the bike ride until they pass the person now running and drop the bike and repeat. This continues for about 7 miles. It isnt suppose to be a race, but it always turns into one. The look on the peoples faces when some idiot rides past them, sometimes in the water, jumps off the bike while it is still moving and starts running down the beach is quite funny.
This is something track teams, football teams, hockey teams and even soccer teams have been doing for years. Old school style, now you see special parachutes and bungee cord harnesses.
sounds like the muddy buddy in sand
.
maybe that is where our coach got the idea. I want to do the muddy buddy then
When I played rugby in undergrad we made a harness and would do long sprints dragging a guys SUV behind us. Def a tough workout.

I’ve seen the tire dragging thing in a couple of places. The first was in Pen Hadow’s book “Solo: The North Pole”. There’s a picture in there of him dragging three tires though the roads on England. The second was in the moving “Running on the Sun” about the Badwater Ultra. Curiously, it was the same guy who got me interested in the book and the movie.
Cheers,
Rob
Yeah, we did that in high school football and at the fire academy. At the station we have a section of 5" hose that you can drag around the field and it will give you the same type of workout. The thing about tire pulling is that its all relative to the drag of the tire more than the weight. If someone is tall enough that it will lift the front of the tire off the ground, there is less surface area in contact and less resistance. To get the most benefit, make sure that doesn’t happen. Oh, and if the tire is full of water from a rainstorm, your first couple of pulls will be much harder. Have fun.
