Straight marathon Training Program?

Hi everyone,

Haven’t been round much of late (off season in the Southern Hemisphere) - hope everyone’s season is going great.

My Dad wants to run a marathon on October. He ran the Melbourne Half last year, and this year thinks he wants to try and take the step up. He is a 57 guy who is very fit and has a lifetime of sports behind him, and hopefully heaps more to come.

Can someone point me in the direction of a training program that will help him get to the finish line? (Not necessarily aiming to go fast, just to get there.) Also, any advice from those of you to have discovered marathon running later in life would be gladly welcome.

See ya!!

Try looking on Runnersworld.com - from what I remember, they had several different programs - from “beginners” to “advanced”… I’d also recommed looking at the “Yasso 800” training (which is also on the RW site)…

www.halhigdon.com has good training programs too. Hurry, Oct. is almost upon us!

I don’t know if 37 qualifies as “later in life”, but I ran my first marathon this past Jan. and am planning to run Chicago in Oct. Injuries are the biggest obstacle, not only because they’re easier to get as you age, but they’re harder to recover from. I injured my foot training for Jan. and had to lay off running for a couple of months. I now limit my running to 4/days per week. On off days, I ride, do strength work, swim, or do yoga. I’ve found it to be pretty easy to modify any of the standard training schedules to accommodate these limitations.
