I am planning on wearing my Giro Selector for New Orleans half ironman this year. I was wondering if anyone has ever used the space inside this helmet to stash a CO2 air pump and an extra tube just in case it is needed.
Have not done it but did see someone else suggest this from experience on one of the other threads. Don’t remember which. Sorry. They said they did it for sprint/ oly distances I believe but that for longer ones the weight makes their neck tired. I thought it was an interesting idea.
And extra tube would be kind of heavy in the end of a helmet, not sure of the safety.
But the CO2? In an impact, it is possible it could explode. You don’t want that anywhere near your head or face.
The extra weight might even keep the tail down out of the wind

I can understand maybe the weight hurting my neck but exploding CO2? Does this happen? I’ve never seen it.
Not sure if it has happened in a helmet (likely not, or we probably would’ve heard about it), but not many riders store them up there. But CO2 cartridges can be placed in conditions to cause an explosion. Impact with the ground or another vehicle is most certainly one.
So it all comes down to (with credit to Dirty Harry), “Do you feel lucky?”
(FYI, lots of folks make all kinds of cool aero carriers that can hold your gear in different places on your bike. Why put a small metal vessel at 800 psi right next to your head? Just a thought … )

Perhaps a valid point.
Better to just zip tie it under your seat or get a aero carrier. I think Jordan Rapp’s wind tunnel testing showed that a very compact bag behind the seat had almost not aero impact.
Do the rules require that you wear your helmet while fixing your tire a the side of the road? You may risk a DQ if you remove the helmet to get to your flat kit.
