Storage question for carbon fiber bike

Hey all -

Its been over a year since I’ve ridden my bike and it will be a while before I ride it again. I can’t bear to sell her so I want to store her in a way that is safe. Right now she is set up on a trainer in my living room which is OK but it would be nice to have that space back.

Is it OK to keep it on the trainer? I have a partially finished basement I can put it in. I could probably put it on a wall stand too but I don’t know if hanging it by its frame for 1+ years would be good.

Yes, I’ve done a forum search but everything I found was about storing bikes that are being used, not long term storage of carbon fiber.

I think you can hang it any way you want. My understanding is the carbon fiber neither creeps nor experiences “metal fatigue” so anything you do to it short of crushing it is fine. probably a good idea to overlube your chain and components before putting it in wet basement though.

Something we did in classic car biz (old hobby of mine)- if you are going to store soemthing for a while, you can seal it in a big plastic bag (garbage bag) and then put those “Dryer packs” in the bag with the thing- these are the huge versions of the drying chemicalk that comes in beef jerky, etc. that keeps the humidity really low in the bag so you get no rust. Not really an issue with bikes but cant hurt.

No problems either way…hang it or leave it on the trainer. Crank the drum down away from the tire on the trainer.

Note: Before your next ride make sure to go over all the bolts and double check tightness. They tend to work loose when stored for long periods of time.

all my bikes hang on this when not in use.

i can’t imagine the 17lbs of bike hanging is going to do damage to the top tube it’s hanging from.

I’m thinking this is the best idea, I was just worried about potential stress on the CF with long term hanging. I’ll take the wheels off and the bike will be around 13 - 14lbs so it sounds like it shouldn’t be a problem. I have an old steel frame that is just sitting on the floor so putting that up off it would be a good idea too.

Thanks all!

If it’s a nice carbon fiber bike, and it’s my size, I would be happy to “store” it for you at no cost.

Well, I’m 5’2" and it is an Orbea Diva. Probably not going to fit
