Basically when I start he run I can’t even jog because my stomach freaks out. This has happened twice at halfs. I feel bloated on the bike and I back off and cut down on the calories, but it does not help. I am only taking in 500 calories (in training I can handle > 600 calories for the same output) for a sub 2:30 bike split. On this particular race my heart rate was crazy high for the first few minutes of the bike and I did not take anything in until it settled. I ended up biking about 25 watts below the effort I had done during my race simulations. I had no problems with my nutrition strategy in training. I just use infinit and did everal race simulations in training. Race breakfast was also tested in training and was about 700 cal. of ensure and a bananna. When I got to the run my entire abdomine area would spasm if I tried to jog. I walked the entire 13.1 miles, periodically attempting to jog. Even an hour after the race my stomach would freaked when jogging across the street. The only differences I can think of between my races when this does not happen are my asthma inhaler and having to suffer due to long bathroom lines. Anyone know what the cause of the stomach pain is? It is very painful and impossible to jog through. I can walk and bike, but anything more is very painful. I am also on protonix, but have had succesful races while on protonix.
There’s a decent little article on page 38 of the May issue of Triathlete that might be worth a look for you about these types of issues. Good luck.
The article in Triathle Mag describes what you are talking about.
I have the same problems if I swim too hard and swallow a lot of air.

Are you using your own nutrition, or the stuff provided at races? I had that happen for awhile, until I figured out the race drink, while similar, was not the same. I realized everytime I drank the stuff provided on the course (I’m bad-mouthing them, so I won’t say their name… but it rhymes with Schmgatorade Schmendurance) I got bad cramps. I started carrying all of my own nutrition, and just using the aid stations for water. Problem solved.
It was my own nurition which I tested several times in training at higher effort with no issues.
