This past saturday I can down with to the best of my knowledge is a stomach virus. I ran 5 miles sat morning but have not been able to do anything since. I thought I was going to the Y to swim this a.m., but the Power Bar just wasn’t sitting right. I went back home a got in bed. Anyway, I have been doing tris for about 5 years and have never really gone through a sickness during my training. Is this going to wipe me out or should I just look at it as a training vacation and hopefully bounce back refreshed? I hope to get out on the bike for a quick spin tonight, but I’m going to skip a race this weekend. My next race is middle of May so hopefully I can get back going pretty quick…
. . . got it from my 20month old. 6 hours of stomach feeling goofy. 8 hours of being on the can ~ every 4 minutes. I had no idea that much could come out of my body. Just amazing. Able to sleep ~2 hours at a pop that night, then for up to 5 hours the next day. Slept pretty much all day. Lost 7 lbs overnight, obviously mostly water weight. Ate nothing but 6 pieces of toast with honey in 36 hours and that didn’t cause much trouble so far.
I’m just starting my 2 week 1/2IM taper, so we’ll just see how it goes. My plan is to get my stomach feeling healthy and then slowly try to get back into the flow of each sport prior to race weekend. Main goal here is just to be healthy on race day, not too worried about proper taper. Gotta be able to get some calories in the days before the race or I’m really in trouble!
My only advice is to keep drinking.
Good luck…T
Total Rest and Fluids.
Had the same two Sundays ago after getting it from my girlfriend - it hit me halfway through my long ride and I thought I was experiencing the world’s worst bonk, dying, or both (literally had to lie down at the side of the road, shaking, at about 5h!!!). Completely out for M-W. Following collective wisdom of the internet, only tons of rest and clear fluids during that time. lost a total of 7 lbs on normal weight of 156. Fast recovery: felt a bit better by Friday, by Saturday felt I was back to 100%, and on Sunday, did 6h bike with no uncertainty about recovery level. Looking at numbers from Sunday, power / hr numbers were as usual, and weight was back up. currently I’m in the middle of a ‘heavy’ week with no unusual effects or fatigue.
In short, didn’t feel like I missed a beat, but I was really cautious and wanted to be absolutely totally 110% I was physically okay to come back. Also, I feel like it was a nice forced break for a few minor mid-cycle aches and pains.
Good luck. best part is it passes very quick.
