OK, I’ve been dealing with this long enough to ask for some help, please.
Starting this year (I turn 40 btw) I’ve been having a lot of stomach distress, meaning that I feel like I might hurl, during the Wednesday night road race I particpate in. It is an extremely intense 31 miles where my heart rate will hit 200 several times. When the temp is above 90F (it was 94 last evening) and I work that hard, I just feel like I need to puke. I have to let off the gas quite a bit for the sensation to go away. I’ve had this experience many times this year as it has been quite hot.
As long as I’m not working so hard, it can be as hot as it wants and I don’t experience this, but the two together…gheesh.
Haven’t changed my drink - I take a weak solution of Accelerade and have used it for a few years now.
Any suggestions? It could be the drink I suppose, or maybe I need to move to Maine. Easier to switch drinks to check that theory than move where it is cooler.
puking after a bunch sprint/solo break is not that uncommon. Just hold till after the line, or use it to disrupt those around you on your way to the line.
Try changing the drink for a couple of weeks and see if it changes. Some people (but not all) have trouble with the protein in Accelerade during really hard efforts. I am OK with it up to a certain level, then my stomach starts to cramp. I can stay below a certain level for long periods of time, but I can’t push past that point.
I have had the same problem in the last 3-4 weeks. It has really been hot here, and any really tough effort (speed/distance) and I feel the same. I have noticed that on long days it takes longer to come on (2-3hrs) but then I can not get it to go away once it is there. I also use a weakened Accelerade, but it also happens with Gatorade as well.

Flavor level is a big factor on making you feel nauseated in the heat. Just watering down a product leaves you deficient in sodium and calories and other important nutrients that will make your performance suffer. Also, Accelerade has a ton of protein and that can be tough to digest at high HR/AT levels.
We offer you the ability to dial the flavor down so it will still taste quite good even when it is 90+ deg outside. Because you are not watering down the product the calories and electrolytes will be where you need in the heat. Not much tastes better than water when it is really hot outside.
