My nightmare came true this afternoon when I left work to ride home from Santa Monica and found my beautiful, new P3C stolen. It felt like getting punched in the stomach. Horrible feelings of fury, sadness, and regret (if only I rode my other bike to work today …).
Talked to the guard at the only entry/exit point of the underground garage, talked to building security, talked to the police. I’m at a loss for how one would fail to notice a suspicious looking dude stealing an exotic looking bike from a bike rack not more than 25 feet away from the guard stand. Especially when they see me every day with my bikes.
The long and short of it is, if anyone in the Los Angeles area sees a P3C with HED bars and a compact crankset under a guy who has no business riding a bike that nice, feel free to hit him over the head with a frame pump.
Damn NewGuy I am sorry for your loss. I just got my P3C and left immediately for vacation. I had the thought of having the P3C gone when I cam home and how that would feel. I’m in San Diego so I will keep a look out for it. Try posting anything about the bike that was unique such as what brand of compact crankset? Was it a DA equipped bike? What kind of pedals? What size was the bike? Were the CSC decals on or off? What kind of saddle? Make sure you check out craigslist, eBay, as well as post this with Trizombies and LATri.
Its a 56cm, HED bars with s-bends, FSA compact cranks, small tear on the left elbow pad from me being a little careless, everything else stock. Already posted this to the LA Tri and will do Trizombies as well. Thanks for the thoughts.
Don’t think cramming it in an elevator with 11 other people would fly. Nor do I have space in the office. Of course the fact I didn’t do just that has crossed my mind repeatedly over the last 3 hours.
You ride your P3C to work? Wow! I own a p3c and would never even consider riding to work. I ride my beater bike, but then again I live in Chicago. Then to put it in a bike rack, I agree with the other poster, “What the ???”. If you have homeowners or renters insurance you are probably covered – check your policy.
I think NewGuy probably beat himself up pretty good about the fact that he left his P3C on his bike rack. I can only imagine how angry at myself I would be if I had done so.
Maybe we should stop pouring on the “Why the hell did you…” or “What the F— were you thinking” remarks.
He probably posted here to have everyone keep an eye out and not to get shelled for his choice. He’s probably a bit embarrassed on top of everything else.
Just a thought! The guy could probably just use some Bike-Luv right now
I don’t know if this will make you feel any better, but earlier this summer several members of the Washington Nationals had some VERY expensive cars vandalized, burglarized and in one case stolen completely from the parking lot at RFK Stadium in DC. They had left their cars there in a “guarded” lot while the team was on a ten day road trip. The video surveillance cameras were mindful enough to capture the whole escapade.
They took quite a few jabs about leaving $50k cars for over a week out in a lousy part of town.
As someone who has had their car stolen (brand new, only 3k miles) I feel your pain. That bike will stick out like the proverbial sore thumb though, and if any bike can be spotted on the road at 3000m that’s the one.
“The guy could probably just use some Bike-Luv right now ;-)”
