Stock wheels on '08 Felt B2 any good?

What does everyone think of the quality and aero-ness of the stock wheels on the 2008 Felt B2? The wheelset is some OEM thing unique to Felt: “Felt Exclusive TTR2 40mm deep 20/24 spoked Triathlon Wheelset w/ titanium skewers”. I’ve love to get a set of Zipps, but I don’t think my budget will allow it. So I’ve been thinking about Flashpoints or HED Jets.

To compare apples-to-apples, how much better/faster/more aero do you think a set of Flashpoint 40s would be compared to this stock wheelset?

I realize it’s hard to say these things with any precision… but I’d like to see if the responses are tilted strongly one way or the other.

Alex

We’ve had a few sets come through. They are pretty good- not very light, but they bridge the gap from training wheels to race wheels. No wheel can do everything, but this wheel is pretty beefy and versatile.

If you can only own one wheelset, they are a viable choice IMO.

Thanks for chiming in Tom. The B12 will be on my short list if I decide to get a bike this year.

Thanks Tom.

Well, the FP40s are a shallower wheel, and I think they’re based on the 303 mold that didn’t have a toroidal cross section (I remember that only being implemented in the dimpled, 44mm generation).

If you’re looking at Flashpoint wheels, why not just ride the FP60 or 80?

My mistake, apparently the FP40 DOES have the toroidal shape. It’s still shallower, though, and everyone on these boards will more than likely tell you to consider the deeper Flashpoints. Deeper is faster.

If I buy flashpoints, I would probably buy a pair of 80s. Definitely good advice.

But – I want to get a sent how good the OEM wheelset is first. So I thought it would be a better comparison to ask how they perform relative to the 40mm Zipp or Flashpoint, which is the same depth as the OEM.

Tom, stupid question, are they AL or carbon wheels? Also are you going to review the B12 ? Thanks.

Rather than opine on the wheels, perhaps I can answer some of the more data-rich questions:

The FP40s shape is a patented shape, but if you were going to shell out “carbon” money on some wheels, I’d encourage you to go to the deeper 58mm or 82mm FPs.

The Felt TTR wheels are not heavy for a clincher, yes, they are heavier than a carbon aero cross section tubular, but you won’t find a deeper wheelset, and these are lighter than many 30mm faux-aero alloy wheels.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
