Stinger 90 or Hed 3 front: Which would be more crosswindy?

of the hed stinger 90 or hed 3, which would you feel more in the front in a wind?

Hed 3
.

ok thanks
.

stinger 90 will be worst… the h3 isnt so bad but still a bit twitchy… the stinger 90 isnt often sold as a front wheel because the side for is major on windy day.

if you combine it with a disc, it will make both the 90mm and h3 more stable and easier to handel

jonnyo is right - either will make the front twitchy, but a rear disc will actuall HELP overall bike stability. I’ve had both wheels (actually I use a Jet 90 front now and just did a 100 mile training ride on it) and I find the Hed3 much more prone to crosswind instability. Many also report a Blackwell or Planet X 100 more stable than a Hed3 front to crosswinds. Now which is the faster wheel? Got me - data looks like it depends upon the yaw angle (HED data that is).

zipp as data on the planet x 101 and blackwell 100… there is a graph posted somewhere on slowtwitch… the 101 and 100 are very similar to a 404 but better at high wind angle.

I guess for someone like me(140lbs) i do have hard time with the 100m front and didnt feel good about riding it. i rode a hed 3 with disc and was ok but would not use it in hawaii!!!

looking forward to see if the 808 is any different in side wind force compare to my past 82mm PX??? i will go test it today actually!!!

Did you get a chance to test the 808, and if so, what were your impressions?

I recently got a set of Hed Stingers to go with my Hed3’s. While at Hed I asked them this same question and they said the Hed 3 will handle better and be less effected. The also said it is still the fastest front wheel they sell. You could call and see what they say, but this is what I was told by them.

I dont know if this makes sense but the wind likes to push you over with the h3 and with a bw 100 it seemed to make me lean or steer over? I rode a renn on back with both setups. Im 170lbs, the wind didnt bother me even at crosswinds in the 20mph range. Fast descents can be interesting though. I recently have been trying out a set of 808s and they are amazing, my favorite wheelset by far.

the 808 is awsome… i love it alot and easier to handel than many of the deeper 90mm or 100mm wheels …but i m not sure if it s easier than the hed3… i would say similar and the hed3 feel more stable in very high speed downhills… it can be scary with the 808 when reaching over 45-50miles/h in cross wind downhill…

I would say the Hed 3 may feel a bit “twitchier” all the time, while the 808 only gets there on the down hills and when cornering. That’s my impression any ways. The 808 seemed (for me) far worse at high speeds and corning though. That is, when it got twitchy you really noticed it. My Hed 3 was kind of consistent and doesn’t really get worse with stronger wind or increased speed.

I am sold on 60mm rims (for the front) now. I wouldn’t bother with a 80/90 front again. The extra speed, if there is any just isn’t worth the hassle.

exactly my observation…well said… the hed3 is more predictable and the 808 is one fast wheel but you dont know when it will start going crazy on you…and when it does… it s scary but mostly only happen at very high speed…(downhills)

i think overall i feel safer on the hed3 …140lbs!!!

Exactly. A couple of years ago at IMWI I was going downhill very fast. Maybe 45 mph in the aero position of course. At the very bottom of the hill was a bridge with a creek under it. Wind that day was 20 mph + gusts. When I hit the bridge I got the wind big time. I wasn’t paying attention enough to have time to over react and I think that is the only thing that kept me on my bike :). That is when I decided to switch back to a more reasonable front wheel :).

Oh yeah. I race at 178 or so- and all the bs about a disc helping stabilize the front is just that.
