Stiff neck?

I’ve been experiencing a stiff neck on long rides? It seems to happen at 80 to 85 miles and doesn’t go away until I stop.

Anyone have any suggestions? Are there some exercises that could help that I’m overlooking?

Thanks for the help!

havig a light helmet helps a lot. FYI, Bell Ghisallo claims 310g, Pneumo is 305g, Giro Eclipse is 254g.

Are you holding you head up while you ride? I keep my head down and look through the top of my glasses allmost all of the time. Just remember to keep it high enough to look down the road. Light helmets work great too. I use the Giro Eclipse.

How long have you been riding? Have you recently bumped up your cycling mileage? Have you recently changed your set-up on your bike?

Elevate your handle bars a bit for the longer rides. Wear rimless sunglasses so that you’re not extending your neck to avoid looking thru the top rim. Could also be bike fit if you’re too extended on a larger frame or longer stem.

The only time I ever experience a stiff neck during rides was after my accident in which I dislocated a vertabre in my neck.

My physiotherapist had me do some neck exercises to re-strengthen it. I’m gonna good luck see if maybe I have them written down somewhere and I’ll get back to ya.

I have had neck problems, and most of it stemmed from a muscle spasm in my trapezius muscle pulling my vertebrae out of line. Some good stretches:

This one you can do sitting in a chair–Grab the side edge of the seat with one hand and lean to the opposite side and tilt your head that way also. You should feel a good stretch in your trapezius and maybe get a pop or two out of your neck.

This one you can do standing up (at a rest stop on your ride or before it)–Hold one arm straight down at your side. Reach behind your back with your other arm and grab your wrist. Pull down on the wrist while tilting tour neck to the other side. Again, you will feel a stretch and get a pop or two. AAAAHHH!

I’ve riding consistantly for 3yrs. I’m training for IMCDA, so my mileage is in the 125 to 225 range. I don’t have any other pain issues or injuries. I feel my bike position is pretty dailed based on computrainer use this winter. I have a light helmet.

I appreciate all the feedback! I think I need to focus on some stretch/strength excises. Does anyone have any good exercises? I feel I’m look up to much due to the “hit by a log truck” possibility.

Thanks again!

Any doing IMCDA?
