Why do we see so many STI shifters used in Pro cycling time trials but very few in triathlon?
Didn’t see that. Who was riding with STI today?
I have seen a few. Can’t recall names off the top of my head. I’ve noticed it other years as well. I also saw it at the world champs in Hamilton.
I don’t remember seeing anyone either…
I could see it as a possibility in an uphill TT, or maybe if the team doesn’t have enough money to put everyone on TT bikes.

No I’m talking about STI on bull horn bars.
One of the top french and last to go riders may have had the campy electronic shifter buttons at the end of the aerobars with the end caps still on; no bar end shifters, so it may have looked like he was using sti.
Yeah, I didn’t see any of that. I’m not even sure how you would do that.
some of the brake’s kinda look like that on profile design… so that may have been it.

I think it was Christophe Moreau. At least he was the guy near the end with the ergo shifters.
Just like this:

Used to be pretty common with the Euro-teams but you see it less and less unless it’s a very technical course.
Wow. I’ve never seen that before. Weird.
I’ve seen it like that before. Im assuming that on a technical course, it gives you the ability to better brake into and shift out of corners without having to move your hands a whole lot and sacrifice your ability to steer.
Seems like that would be very difficult to use correctly. The angle the levers would be sitting at doesn’t look very useful. That said, I’m no pro rider, and if they’ve used it before, it must have worked for somebody.
This is probably true, especially with the Campy thumb lever, for those using campy. Shimano may be easier to use. I suppose with practice it may not be that bad. I just know it can be hard to corner, brake, and shift with the shifters and brake levers in different positions.

I used to run STI levers on a mavic base bar w/ Scott clip ons that was heavily modified to get it to shift correctly. After the first ride it was easy to use. B ut I agree, bar end shifters are a better choice
Campag offer their ‘aero’ brake levers which look identical to the ergo ergo units but without the shifting mechanisms. The pictured Lampre rider is using those (you can see that there is no thumbe lever on the brake lever body) but I can’t see where his shifters are from the photo. I noticed Moreau also had the same brake levers but definitely had bar-end shifters.
The thumb levers are there, just hard to see. On our right (riders left) you can see the thumb better than the other lever.
I’ve often thought of using this setup. Mostly for training. I just don’t like bar end shifters when riding hilly roads and such. I like the control I get from holding the bars regular… but I guess thats what getting used to being aero is for, right?
