Steve King - WTF?

https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/14/politics/steve-king-rape-incest-comments/index.html

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?” he said in Urbandale, Iowa, according to video posted online by the Des Moines Register, which was first to report on the remarks Wednesday.

“Considering all the wars and all the rape and pillage that has taken place … I know I can’t certify that I was not a part of a product of that,” King said. “I’d like to think that every one of the lives of us are as precious as any other life,” he added.

The remarks came as King was defending not allowing exceptions for abortion in cases of rape or incest.

His point while bizarre, disingenuous, and misleading is probably true. Think Mongol Hordes, Napoleonic Army, Barbarian conquest etc etc back in the day.

The better question to ask is how the fuck this guy keeps being reelected? I mean seriously there’s no Republican that can best him in a primary or a Democrat in a general? Really?

Have you read any of his books??? Dude who can come up with that shit has to have a few screws loose. And, I say that as someone who thinks he is brilliant and has two autographed first editions.

It is most likely true. He could have said, “abortion is murder and the fact the fetus came from rape or incest doesn’t make murder ok.” But no, he had this thought come into his head. Then he decided that this thought was worthy of being said out loud.

The only explanation is that when he was in high school budget cuts caused his school to not have enough football helmets to go around so he volunteered to go without. Yet more evidence that football is too dangerous to allow kids to play.

There is more than a few screws loose. I can’t even give the GOP grief for him, they don’t like him either. This is all on the voters of his district.

What part is “probably true?”

That most if not all of us have some ancestor who was born out of rape or incest? That’s likely true.

But the part that there’s be no population left? That’s ridiculous.

Either way, the guy’s an idiot. It’s one thing to be opposed to abortion even in the case of rape or incest. Even though I disagree with that position, I recognize it’s a legitimate position. But why can’t people like King and others who have that position show at least a modicum of decency, sensitivity, and civility?

Well, there is one prominent member of the GOP who I don’t think has ever called him out or suggested he resigns.

I don’t know if it’s ridiculous at all. Roughly 1 in 200 men alive today can trace their ancestry back to Ghengis Khan, one of the rapiest guys in history. I don’t think it’s necessarily ridiculous to think that, you you went back and pulled every direct descendant of rape or incest, and all their subsequent descendants, we’d be pretty close to an unsustainably low population level.

It’s ridiculous to assume that, but for rape and incest, there would be no population today. It has always been possible to procreate without that. In fact, I suspect the norm throughout history has been otherwise.

Pretty much all of humanity can apparently trace its ancestry to an “Eve” somewhere in Africa. But that doesn’t mean she raped anyone.

That may not have been precisely what King was trying to say. His comments were a bit ambiguous. He’s never been that articulate.

I’m sure if those guys were stopped from raping they would have become celibate monks and never fathered anyone ever.

What I really like about this is that he was sitting around thinking about it. Really thinking it through. And concluded that he finally figured out that really clever argument that no one can counter.

And the reaction of everyone in the room when they heard this amazingly insightful thought? Dude, I don’t know what the fuck goes on in your family, but rape and incest aren’t ok in our’s.

I agree it was a weird argument to make, but it’s not like he’s arguing rape and incest are ok.

Whether he is historically accurate or not, he was using this as justification to not allow abortion in instances of rape or incest in 2019 if you listen to the context of the interview.

I am from Iowa and although he does not represent my district, I apologize to the rest of the Country that the Western half of Iowa thinks he is justifiably qualified to be a Congressman. In any other time, he would have been pushed to resign by now.

I am from Iowa

You have my pity

Of course it’s ridiculous, it assumes there wouldn’t have been willing and able men about to the deed if it weren’t for the rapists.

a fair few products of rape and incest got exposed or thrown down holes. Humanity has always dealt with taboo conception harshly. To believe you can legislate it away is unrealistic.

If the christian bible is correct, incest is a requirement. It says god created Adam & Eve. They had children. Without incest, how do you account for offspring from a start of two?

Then there is Noah. Yeah, the guy who built the ark. That guy. The christian bible says that only Noah and his 3 sons and their 4 wives survived. Without incest, how do you account for offspring from a start of 8 who are all gen 1 or gen 2 related?

Now, I think the guy is a tool. But is he wrong or simply falling back on his archaic religious beliefs?

But is he wrong or simply falling back on his archaic religious beliefs?

I don’t know, but falling back on religious beliefs is often a good way to be wrong.

Yes, I would say the answer is both.
