Not sure who noticed, but at least 2 ST’ers I know of performed hors admirably at Masters TT Nats in Bend today. Carl Spackler took 1st in the 40-44 group and nslckevin took 1st in the 50-54 group. These guys have stepped up the level and quality of “amateur” TT’ing throughout the country. Very impressive. Damn fine performances by many other NorCal time trialists as well.
Any other ST’ers race there today that I don’t know of? Someboy has to be lurking…
Those guys rock! Not that I felt bad about getting crushed by them at the Putah Creek 10 mile and 40K TTs, but I can now say that it took master TT national champs to beat me
Thanks much Joe, here’s a pic of the Team Specialized Racing TT twins. nslckevin, on the left, capped a Cinderella year with stars & bars after setting a national 40k AG record in June (and apparently didn’t get the memo about, ahem, proper podium attire).
And with STer Paul Thomas (to my immediate left) who finished 3rd. Paul and I have raced together a few times but never met. Nice to chat with him for a bit yesterday and look forward to throwing more leather in the crit tomorrow and road race Sunday:
Both Kevin and I are indebted to you and Wheelworks for what you’ve done for the TT community in Northern Cal – no question PCSD is a huge part of tuning the motor. Plus, pointing out things you see with our positions (how I was incorrectly sitting on the bike last week), and using your golden rolodex to get us the fastest gear like the Selector and Castelli speedsuit is all part of the equation.
I also owe STer Roady a number of adult recovery beverages. He dialed my position when I won in 2009 and helped me get it back on track earlier this season, after a bunch of little tweaks here and there over time left it screwed up. Have to also thank my coach Jesse Moore. After a very disappointing 2010 we went back to the drawing board for this season and made a number of tweaks. It was very much of a collaborative and individualized approach as opposed to just “do this”.
Lastly, since cyclists can be a superstitious lot by nature, have to thank my wife (aside from being supportive of a very selfish sport) for finding Chanchito, who made the trip to Bend. Chanchito brought the luck and Chancho (my wife’s name the Shiv) brought the game.

Nacho: Chancho. When you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It’s for fun.
Thanks Tom, and yes, Nacho is a wise man for many reasons.
No worlds for me this year, giving the wife a break from all that. Although she emailed last night “perhaps I should consider going” since it’s a course that suits me really well with a good amount of climbing. Maybe 2012.

Ahem, who’s Team Hat did you wear on the podium?
What he said about Joe and the PCSD. A couple of years ago we were thrilled to go barely under 21’ and now a fair number of guys have gone under 20’. I’m still trying…
I see some other STers on the list - but mostly just lurkers.
They work to stay pretty low key on the board so I won’t out them, but here’s a further reinforcement that lots of fast folks do stop by ST now and then.
Congrats, Chris. I’m oddly disappointed you won’t be going to worlds (odd in that we’ve never even met yet I live vicariously through you), was looking forward to a photo series without the heartbroken bent over entry.
Matching rainbow jerseys would look great on you two. Dare I say, may even better than stars and bars.
