I’m looking for a new stem for my bike and don’t know how to measure them. My felt stem says 1.4 which I assumed 140mm but measured from where to where? I need a stem that is about 20mm shorter and have found a zillion of them on ebay. Without them in front of me I can’t compare.
I know that It needs to be 1" threadless and 26mm bar.
Any help?

If the shoe fits, get another one just like it.
Stems are measured center to center, not by their full length.
140mm means that measuring from the center of the clamp that clamps onto your fork to the center of the clamp that clamps onto your handlebars the stem is 140 mm, The problem comes when you start comparing a riser stem to one that is level to one that drops

I always exaggerate the size of the measurement just alittle . ; )
Stems are measured center to center, not by their full length.
They also shouldn’t be measured after swimming in cold water.
Another rule of thumb… If you have big feet, your stem is probably long enough.
If you’re stem’s too short, it may help to buy a huge, 4-wheel drive pick-up truck with 6 inches of lift and really big tires.
