Stem length (4)

greetings-
I originally posted this question as a response to the recent article “Inputs and Outputs 1” and am reposting it here at the request of
Thee Editor.

: could you please elaborate a bit on why you feel a stem on a tri bike should be shorter than on a road bike? I assume it has to do with handling, but am struggling a bit to understand exactly how.

The original article will provide a little context for the question, but I think it stands alone pretty clearly also. My background is as a roadie and we (for the most part) shoot for stem lengths between 90-120mm. So curious about the handling implications of the Tri bike w/short stems vs road bike. It almost seems that a shorter stem with so much weight over the front wheel in an aero position would make for quite twitchy handling. Looking forward to bending my brain to understand why this is apparently not the case!
thanks,
m
