Steel is real, Baby!

…or so I have heard. I have ordered a custom steel roadbike in Dedaccia 16.5 tubing - will slap on some shorty aerobars, and it will my main bike for training solo and group rides, racing tris and TT’s of all distances and the odd audax or sportive ride.
Could still change my mind on the tubing - my other choice would be Reynolds 853, slightly cheaper, smaller diamater tubes so looks a bit more retro. Dont really know anymore than that. My builder steered me towards the Deda.
Anyne have any comments on the pros or cons of either Deda 16.5 or Reynolds 853? Im sure I wouldnt be able to tell the difference in a blind test (is that safe on a bike!?) but worth asking anyway…Cheers!

I love steel. Do you know if the new 953 is an available option?

Yes, the builder is using 953, but it adds an extra £450 to the build cost - cant justify it! Would rather save the money towards race wheels or towards my next frame!

One builder told me that 853 was originally a tool steel and should never have been used for bikes, I think that may be a little harsh as lots of people love their 853 frames. The Deda is a reputedly nicer ride (wouldn’t know personally - my steel bike is 531 - now that’s real!) though can be built very stiff so don’t go overboard with tube diameters. Deda Zero was apparently one of the nicest steel tubesets ever and they appear to be doing a re release.

Is it going to be fillet braze, lugged or tig?

wish i could afford it…

I had a similar choice, except Columbus instead of Dedaccia, and went with shaped Columbus tubes. I like the ride.

narrow will be more aero…that’s obviously not your main concern though.
