Staying on the strip in Vegas...where to run?

Will be at the Venetian for 4 days and I need to get in a couple longish runs…(10-12 miles). Since I have no car I can’t drive anywhere so I’ll have to start at the hotel. Any suggestions as to direction so I don’t get mugged or hit by a bus? Thanks.

treadmill in the hotel gym.

I just ran down toward that space needle thing and kept on going, then when my Timex GPS unit said I went far enough, I turned around.

I used to hate Las Vegas, thanks to Mark Trzeciak now it is a hoot! Running there early in the morning can be quite an experience. You see some strange things on th strip at 6:00 AM.

That said, there are not many experiences like doing an all-dayer at Interbike then an all-nighter up and down the strip capped off by an early morning run, nap by the pool and then doing it all over again. Big fun. Dinner at the Parisian across from the fountain is a must.

UNLV has a pretty good size campus adjacent to the strip - near the Hard Rock Hotel. It took me 40 minutes to do a loop of the campus and surrounding area - I’m going to say that is 5 miles and you can easily find ways to tack on more milage. Look at a map of the strip and the adjacent area before you…it turns suburban - rural quickly off the strip.

UNLV has an indoor pool too, call ahead to check on the workout schedule.

I agree with Tom. I’ve run the strip once, and while I would not want to make that my regular run, where else can you run past a pyramid and sphinx, over the Brooklyn bridge, past a fantastic fountain/water show, within sight of the Eiffel tower, and past a pirate battle? Just be patient with the enormous groups of enormous tourists. And have fun.

The Venetian up to the welcome to Las Vegas sign past the Luxor is 8mi round trip. Most of the intersections have stairs and ped crossings so you can get in some “hill work”. I love to run the strip, you always can say, I never saw that before", no matter what time you run. The pool closest to the strip is aprox 25 yards long but no place to flip turn.

Have fun

Dave

I personally don’t like the concrete and usually either taxi over to UNLV or if I ghave a car head out to Red Rock to run the trails which are awesome.

if your going to run the strip run it early. by 8am people are clogging up several points like triglycerides in arteries.

I was there over the Thanksgiving holiday, stayed downtown @ Main Street Station. I ran down Las Vegas Blvd. to the Mirage and back—1 hr. My advice to you is stay away from downtown! Donwtown has about a 1 mile radius which is pretty shady. Lots of homeless people, wino’s etc. My cut-off would be the Stratosphere. Lots of runners early in the AM, and a good way to people watch. But watch out for the cars turning the corners!

I just got back yesterday from a vacation to Vegas. I was only there for four days but I found it impossible to run on the strip. I stayed at Caesars Palace (right next to the Venetian). Even at 7 a.m. it was too much of a stop and go and dodging tourist to have an actual run. They call it the city that never sleeps for a reason.

I would suggest anything else but the strip espacially if you want to do a 10-12 mile run.

Have fun! It is a beautiful hotel! Catch the “O” show at your hotel. It is amazing.

I know you won’t have a car, but if you are in Vegas, aside from early morning 10K runs in the vicinity of the strip, the best place to do a real run is at Red Rock Canyon which is only a 20 min drive from the strip. It is totally awesome. I got lost there (don’t ask me how) and a planned 1:15 run in the desert ended up being something like 2:15. Anyway, did not want to get dehydrated in the desert, but the exploration part of the experience was nice. Having to recover and show up to work in my company’s trade show booth with no breakfast (due to the unplanned length of the run), was not great. Seriously though, do yourself a favour and drop the $50 required to rent a car for a day and drive out to Red Rock for an early morning run. It is totally awesome at sunrise. A true desert experience !

While in Vegas a few years ago I found it to be one of the most bike and pedestrian unfriendly cities I’ve ever seen. No paved shoulders, in some places no sidewalks, streets not connecting, it was very hard to even walk from one area to another. Quite disappointing for an area that has decent enough year-round weather to support bike/pedestrian transportation.

That said, I back up d-paul and say try get to Red Rock Canyon. It was the highlight of our weekend. Saw lots of bike groups heading that way on a weekend morning and lots of trails to explore. Enjoy!

During the Interbike trade show we get up at 5:30 and run at 6am. We meet at the bridge right in front of the Venetian and sometimes have such illustrious company like Luis Alvarez (Mexico) who has participated in every IM race at least once.
We turn right and run past the Sand’s convention center and then left along the new Skytrain. Eventually we’d turn right and right again until we looped back. The nice thing about that run is that on certain sections you are able to run on this gravely/sandy surface. Plus you can easily adjust the distance by adding another block.

I go to L V quite often and I run early mornings right up and down the strip. You can get in quite a long run if you go from the far end to the downtown area and back. Just enjoy the sights.
