Ok, I LOVE strawberries. I bought a pound about a month ago. Well they sucked. The other day I saw them on sale again. 2lbs for $1.97!!! they were so delicious, ate 2lbs on Monday. Sale went through Thursday so I bought another 2lbs. I ate about 10 strawberries that night and 20min later my arms started itching. A little later I had bumps all over my legs. F*ck, everything (well, luckily NOT EVERYTHING itches since then. Went to the doc today because I barely could sleep last night. They gave me Benadryl. While I felt better, the drowsiness kicked in. I was soo tired during class and almost fell asleep. Now I’m at home and back to the awakening state…with all the itching. Just took another tablet and hope it will kick in anytime soon.
I never had any allergic reaction to strawberries and always wash fruits and vegetables before I eat them. Did you ever have an allergic reaction after eating them? How long will that last? This really sucks. Maybe it explain my bad performance during my VO2max yesterday, just couldn’t get my ventilation rate up.
My daughter’s friend is allergic to them and has to stay away from them completely. Or, you could just eat them and then blame them for your bad training days!
thanks dawn. Now that I know I’m allergic to them I won’t eat them anymore. I don’t have to have excuses for bad training days. They rarely happen and I’m old enough to know why I’m doing this. Everybody will have their ups and downs.
I had a VO2max in the morning. I didn’t have any signs of strawberry reaction at that time. However, I’ve eating plenty of them the days before. It was just weird that I couldn’t get my ventilation rate up. I maxed out at 63.7ml/kgmin (4890ml/min) compared to 79.6ml/kgmin (5970ml/min) two months ago. Those are drastic changes! I just wanted to know about other people’s experience when they have allergic reactions, that’s all.
Even if you wash non-organic strawberries, there still may be enough pesticide residue to hurt you - especially at your intake volumes.
Oragnic strawberries are a lot more expensive, but you might be doing all ST’ers a service if you be our guinea pig and test yourself with 2lbs of organic strawberries!
This time of year we go through a bunch of local fresh picked strawberries. Yummmm. I’ve often read that non-organic strawberries have one of the highest levels of pesticide contamination, but organic can be very expensive and I haven’t found a local grower.
I like to think the chocolate I pour over them somehow neutralizes the bad stuff. And the whipped cream adds a bit of calcium. And of course all this leads to some serious sex which helps my endurance and makes me sleep like a baby!! I love this time of year!!
Reminds me of a similar experience I had with citrus back in college. I had some bizarre viral thing and the doctor told me to drink lots of fluids, water, juice, whatever. So, I set about making myself can after can(concentrate) of orange juice and when I ran out of that, I started making pineapple juice. After about two days of this, and probably gallons of juice, I got exactly what you describe, redness and hives. Took several days to die down. Since then, more than two glasses of oj and I get a little rash.
My theory is that you can OD on something like that and your body just kind of rejects it. Perhaps too there’s something akin to a latent allergy that takes something extreme to become active. I don’t know, just theorizing. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a couple of weeks/months, you could eat strawberries again, but in more limited quantities.
thanks everybody.well I went back to the doc yesterday because it got a little worse. They came to the conclusion, after all, that it wasn’t the stawberries. Since I was on St.Croix the other week, they think I picked up some mite from lying on the beach. But thanks for everybody’s responses.
