Doesn’t it run out? I certainly won’t call myself one the instant I stop racing tris, yet I know others who haven’t done one in years that still claim they are triathletes.
I WAS a college student, but I am not one now, nor would I call myself one.
I would think that it is more a matter of living the lifestyle than when your last race was. Dave Scott hasn’t raced in years and I would still call him a triathlete. Also when you finish a race that involves a swim bike and run you are not necessarily a “triathlete”. My ex-wife finished a sprint triathlete once but she DEFINITELY was not a “triathlete”.
I have just the opposite problem. In the past 3 years I have run about 20 10K’s, 5 half marathons, and 7 marathons, yet I wouldn’t consider myself a “runner”. My triathlon career is even shorter which only consists of 2 half IM’s (this year) and I’m registered for IMCDA. I don’t consider myself a triathlete either. I guess I have too many bad habits to consider myself an athlete of any sort, yet I beat most people in any race.

You ARE a triathlete. Hell, 2 HIM’s and training for an Ironman? Dead giveaway
And NEWSFLASH, you are a “runner” too.
I run, but I am not fast, or what I call a “track star.” But I do OK for my age group, and I do OK in triathlons, so I guess I’m a runner, too.
If you currently swim, bike and run, and you race triathlons currently, you’re definitely a triathlete.
I’m kinda there with you. Maybe it’s a lack of self esteem thing. I’m a father, husband etc etc because I do that all the time, everyday. However I may run a couple races and do a triathlon a 5-10 times a year. Simply training almost every day doesn’t make me a runner/swimmer/cyclist or triathlete.
I don’t know I’m just some guy that enjoys doing a triathlon or 10K every now and then.
I’m wondering if my attitude would change if I won a race or got paid for racing.
