I did sprint and Oly triathlons off and on until about 5 years ago when I had my first shoulder surgery (successful as was the one on the other shoulder). Since then I’ve been doing sporadic running, biking and CrossFit. I’m planning to start training for some sprints and perhaps an Olympic tri beginning next spring (2020). Any and all advice appreciated!
The 5 years between 67 and 72 has a definitive glide path to it, even if you are active the whole time. If you are forced to sit out you can be assured your scale of success will have to be re calibrated. So I guess my advice would be to try not to ramp up too quickly - find your new limits and enjoy the process.
Sorry I needed to think about this for awhile. I am 77 still racing full Ironmans Kona last year and Ironman Moo this year. So the thing that beats me up the most is long runs. I never run back to back days. I do not have set schedule I need to ride and run so many miles each week and it strictly by how I feel to which days I do it. Yes I do a brick once a week. Starting slow and building up is so very important. I very seldom have a complete day off. My light day is a swim. Shoulders I have crashed on mountain bikes a few times to get shoulders working good again i use stretch cords. Swimming in a full wetsuit helps a lot to. Here is the big one…weight…Tour of France skinny does wonders for racing at this age. I race with wrinkles and I race and feel good
