Stand alone vs. tri-splits

I just finished my first season of triathlon after sitting on my ass for 10 years after being a college runner. I did 3 sprints 2 duathlons and 2 Half’s. I have been running some stand alone 5k’s and 10k’s recently. I am dropping minutes off my time from one race to the next as my race strategy gets better. Like drops of 20:53 to 19:33 for 5k’s one week apart. Granted these are not world class times but I am not used to such a drop in times just 1 week apart. I am positive the courses were certified and were accurate distance.

Most of my 5k tri splits were in the 21:50-22:30 range. I am wondering what most people here experinced as differences between stand alone events and tri splits. I am willing to bet there is not much diffrence. Maybe I left some time on the table this year during triathlons by being a little conservative?

ive done a 1.33 for 1/2 marathon in 1/2 im and do 1.27 for half marathon.

That is kind of what I expected, less than 1 sec. per mile at that distance. I was like 25 minutes off my 1/2 marathon time in my 1st 1/2 IM. I am sure this difference in time was the result of poor cycling endurance, and terrible nutrition.

I have gone as fast as 1:20 and not gone worse than 1:28 at Half Marathons, but I believe my fastest Half IM run split is about 1:50 and as horrible as 2:38 (slower than my 2:23 bike split that day)

YIKES is right, no expert here but maybe 10 minutes slower on the bike saves you 20-25 minutes on the run. 2:23 is pretty a solid bike split, then again so is 2:33.

the 1.33 was slowish tho cos my calf kept cramping up so i couldnt pick up the pace when i wanted to. grrr
