This is what I do! Of course, I don’t have users in Asia… Also, Google reCAPTCHA is an excellent way to fight it. Wonder if Gossamer supports it?

we seem to have reached a threshold so that we’re on the radar of the spamming world. we’re taking our own remedial actions, and hopefully it’ll keep the overnight spams to a rational level. but i’m under no illusions that we’ll win the battle outright. like the “war on terrorism” it’s the “war on spam” and the only thing we can do is continue to pour ant killer down the holes as we find them. sorry for the inconvenience.

Dear God no! Captcha use is the hack of all hacks. It is not a solution to a problem but simply a real annoyance to users.

For new user registrations, it would be a 1 time deal. DEFINITELY no reCAPTCHA for every post. Or, maybe have reCAPTCHA for a new user’s first x number of posts. It would weed out the automated Chinese bot SPAM.
Can’t you just require a minimal history like 3 days or 2 posts in order to start a thread. A mini version of the classified rules.

This would do little to nothing to prevent spam. The spam bots would either 1) register usernames, and come back 3 days later to spam the system or 2) register, and then start spamming posts as replies. I think the current ST moderation does a pretty good job.
