This race is a favorite among the pros and many AGs, I’ ve said this many times and here it goes again: St Croix should be the race for the 70.3 world championship.
I coudlnt agree with you more
-it would get it away from kona- have it in teh spring not the fall
-course is hard as hell
-could have all the qualifiers from the year before carry over
.
I know, it’s funny how perfect it is and how people at WTC haven’t been able to see it (or don’t want to). It will also be top with STers there are always many treads about the race.
even though I would love have St. Croix the new location for a world Championship in my backyard, I can’t see the Cruzians pulling it off. Lack of hotels, rental cars, restaurants etc. The island has a tiny bike shop that barely is able to manage this race as it is. Not to mention the locals, who have a difficult time managing the amounts of people who come to the race. The whole island would need serious customer service training.
Do you spent much time in the Caribbean? Do you live in the Caribbean? I am guessing not. First of all, there is only one r in Caribbean. Have you experienced the teeth sucking one gets trying to do normal stuff like banking or mailing etc.
That’s why the venue at St. Croix would be great. It weeds out the ‘oh i’ll just fly in and do the world championships’ mentality that the 30th spot rolldown dudes get.
The world championships are supposed to be tough, and require a commitment to prepare/do/finish…not just another revenue generating 70.3 race that’s easy and kid/family/puppy friendly for all racers.
The hotel/people/bike services were all very friendly and functioning perfectly when I did St. Croix in 2006. I don’t think they could support the 300 idiots showing up to a race with loose headsets, flat tires, and needing new cables like you get at other 70.3’s and certainly at clearwater. Those types of people wouldn’t make the journey. That’s not necessarily a bad thing!
I love your view point. It’s definitely a different way to see the race. Although you know those ironman people are all about money, and would want as many of those types to race as possible. Your view point is the reason why more people do not live here. Thanks for your post.
I have, spend a lot of time there as my parents had a boat in the BVI for 8 years. Sailed in/to the Bahamas on many occasions as well.
Sorry about the typo. I have dyslexia of the fingers and I am legally blind, so I often type very poorly. I put in in extra letters and spell poorly, but I don’t really get too concerned with spelling as long as people know what I mean.
