St. Croix Half Ironman
Sunday, May 1, 2005
1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run

Ironman World Champions Tim DeBoom, Luc van Lierde and Olympic Distance World Champion Chris McCormack will headline the men’s field at the May 1, 2005 St. Croix Half Ironman. The classic event, which features a famously challenging course, should result in one of the best races of the year among these outstanding athletes. The division also includes Ironman race winners Michael Lovato, Petr Verbrousek and Jamie Cleveland. The pros will be duking it out for their share of the $50,000 purse.

The race also includes 30 Ironman World Championship Qualifying slots for age groupers. Some space is still available, and athletes can register by going to the race website www.stcroixtriathlon.com.

Harju will be there also.

I’ve got a buddy in Orlando who has his father’s boat docked on the East coast, Palm Bay or close by.

My dream is to twist around the old surf trip fantasies, and sail on the boat from Fl. to St. Croix, then come in from the boat to do the race, then sail home, maybe throw in some surfing on the way there or back.

Man, that fantasy really gets me going.

Someday.

Dude, you did look at a chart and see it’s over 700 miles from Florida to the Virgin Islands? Been there done that, it’s 5 days (or more) of open water sailing. No very scenic.

Here’s a better idea - Charter a boat in Tortola, sail to St Croix, race, sail around the British Virgin Islands after. Now thats worth the T-Shirt! My parents had a sailboat in Tortolla in the early '90s. We used it and had fantastic trip.

Dude, thanks for ruining my fantasy!

I knew it was a long way, but since my 20 month old hasn’t learned his rigging lessons yet, I’m not provisioning for the trip quite yet.

If I could afford to charter a boat, I’d have all sorts of other fantasies cluttering up my brain. My buddy has the boat, which makes this almost possible, which is of course the necessary ingredient for all good fantasies: “It could happen . . . really!”

So, yeah I know it’s a long way, but a guy can dream. 10 years of surfing mags in the 80’s will do that to a guy.

Peace…T

Now thats a great idea! I chatered boats in Tortola 3 times in the last five years, once for my honeymoon, and two other times with a group of friends. It was a blast! Great Islands, good food, great beaches and lots of beach huts that serve fruity rum drinks. The BVI’s are great for sailing and drinking rum drinks, just make sure you dont do the rum before the BEAST! Oh and plenty of challenging hills(mtns?) for running and biking.
