St. Criox - Report #1 - Thursday

Just got checked in t0 the Buccanner - the host hotel - landed at 1:30 PM and went to the race office downtown to meet with the RD - Tom Gutherie.

Saw Wendy Inghram at the office - she is racing along with Karen Smyers! TYR is a sponsor of the race!

Race registration starts tomorrow at 9:00 AM and the pro’s have to check in with me between 10Am and 1 PM. At 9:00 AM, I’m meeting with the local radio station and doing a pre-race show.

Ironman Live will carry the radio show about the on Sunday, so be sure to check-in. The local radio guys have live remotes from the course throughout the race and I’ll be at the transition/finishline commentating of the event.

Luke McKenzie was on my flight over from San Juan - he just happend to have a bottle of Gatorade Endurence in the pocket of his back-pack. Lemon-lime. (You can expect of few mentions about Gatorade being the official drink of the St. Croix 1/2 ironman in my reports this weekend)

Lisa Bentley was in the hotel lobby on her lap top writing her race report on her win in Australia. This is the first down time she said she has had since the race - training and traveling. She mentoned that the days before a race is the best time to get this type of work done, as she is tapering for the event on Sunday.

Met a young lady from San Fran on the rental car bus, that did the race last year and qualified for Kona - Kona was then her FIRST Ironman! (Tyler was her first name, but I forgot her last name) She hopes to win a spot again this year in the 25-29 division.

Gotta go run the fun run 5K after I take a swim. I’ll write later about the field after I go through the starting list. Z

Thanks for the report. Keep them coming. Funny thing…with the exception of Luke McKenzie, all the other athletes are females

Any chance you’ll post some photos?

I did St. Croix last year… Hot and windy … beautiful and fun.

Ok - I did forget to mention that I saw Heather Haviland and Allison Hayden on the beach as I was getting back from my swim. Heather took second at Powerman Alabama last weekend and Allison won the Lake Louisa Sprint Triathlon last Thursday! I’ll see all the guys today when they check in! Z

Tom you forgot to take me with you. I hope those damsels will live. Make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Tyler Stewart- Last year was her first full year in the sport of triathlon. She is a great person - very unassuming and a hell of cyclist. I guess Tyler neglected to mention to you that she has already qualified for Kona at Ralph’s this year.

Thanks for sharing~ Good luck.
Looking forward to more updates.

Steve
